The automotive program at michigan dearborn is older than most other auto programs in the country . But is it better than the relatively new program at Clemson university which has ties with BMW ?

I'd say so. Having ties with BMW doesn't say much. American engineering is on the rise again, undercutting all other brands in reliability. Also, Dearborn is the home of Ford and you'll find no closer ties with the auto industry than in the very heart of the beast!

You should also consider Kettering University, which has a great program if you want to go directly into the big 3 (Though it is located in Flint, MI). I went to University of Michigan Ann Arbor, and interned at General Motors. When I attended, It seemed like all the interns and co-ops were either from Kettering or UofM.

Intern opportunities have sort of dried up everywhere . When did you intern ? Kettering is in the big 3 ? Which other universities make the big 3 ?

I'm guessing that he means the Big Three, as in: Ford, GM, and Chrysler and getting an internship with one of them.

Your best opportunity to intern with a company with a lot of on-shore engineering would probably be to get hooked up through one of the three UofM schools, Kettering, or maybe even Mich. Tech. if you're looking into the more industrial aspects of the field. UofM is a public ivy though and blows away most public schools not only in the country, but in the world. Kettering is probably THE school I'd go to if I wanted to be an automotive engineer for GM though.

Yes, that is correct. Big Three as in the American Big Three. I interned at General Motors for two years. Most the interns were from UofM. Most of the co-ops were from Kettring. In a co-op, they rotate school and work every 3 months, which has a lot of advantages. To what I have heard, almost all Kettering students get co-ops, and they begin searching for companies (Big Three, IBM, etc.) for you to be interviewed with after admissions.
