Will you need to be directly in Kalamazoo to be close to work, school or such? North of downtown would be the "rougher side" of the city. Also the area near the east campus of WMU (not as bad as north side, its the "student "ghetto"). The west and northwest sides are nice. There is a lot of students on the west side as there is student apartment complexes and housing. If you don't have to be directly in Kalamazoo there's a lot of nice outlying areas/towns, Portage, Oshtemo, Mattawan, Texas Corners, etc that people live in and work in Kalamazoo.

You can't go wrong with staying west of 131 (at least the section north of 94) or south of 94 into Portage.
Any of the outlying areas are fine.

Stay west of Drake Road, south of Parkview / Howard, or east of Sprinkle. The north side is GHETTO. The south side of Kalamazoo is very nice. Portage is safe, but very suburban -- very dull and nondescript.

As far as apartments, complexes like Drake's Pond, Country Club Estates, Pinewood Glen and Dover Hills are good, if a bit overpriced. Avoid apartments near Western unless you like hearing loud parties.

Seriously looking at moving to Kalamazoo because of the, "Kalamazoo Promise". I 've attended school there for a few years, but commuted. I have three children (all under 5). What's the best "family" area and some opinions of the schools? I am originally from just outside of Detroit. I crave, need, love and want city life. Would love to be as close to downtown as possible, but also want somewhat of a yard for my kids.

Well the thing about Kalamazoo is anywhere within the city limits is no longer than a 10 minute drive to downtown Kalamazoo.

I grew up in Kalamazoo, so know the city pretty well. The areas I would avoid are the Edison neighborhood, the East Side, the North Side and the Vine neighborhood (actually anywhere around WMU). Westnedge Hill area and Milwood are not too bad. Portage also is pretty decent.

Mattawan and Texas Corners are pretty safe but pricey. Oshtemo is not too bad, however some of the apartment complexes on Drake Road have a high incidence of break-ins and other crimes according to a map I saw at the Oshtemo township office. Otherwise the west side of Kalamazoo is ok.
