Michigan sweats GM-Chrysler talks | The Australian

This is shocking!! This would have to be the biggest job loss at once in Michigan history or maybe United States history. They are not talking about early retirement or buyouts these are layoffs! My uncle works at the Chrysler Chelsea Proving Grounds and if a buyout did happen the proving grounds would most likely be shut down as GM already has their proving grounds in Milford. It says that in the article many Chrylser engineers have already stopped working at the headquarters in Auburn Hills because they believe that this layoff is already here and once it is finalized they will be marched right out the door.
Big job loss could happen at:
*Chrysler World Headquarters (Auburn Hills)
*Sterling Heights Stamping
*Sterling Heights Assembly
*Warren Truck Plant
*Chelsea Proving Grounds
*Chrysler Finacial (Farmington Hills)
>Dozens of plants in both Canada and Mexico

Like I said before this is one of the biggest buyouts, mergers or what ever you want to call it in Automotive history. Cerberus says something will happen because they cannot afford to hold onto Chrysler.

But aren't the GM workers more interested in striking than in working? I doubt many feel too bad for them, especially since they didn't give a rat's rear end about the shops that folded when they went on strike recently.

The job losses will be bigger if GM and Chrysler go under and shut down. GM must have a cash infusion to survive. Chrysler is just a liability that no one wants. If GM can get paid to take Chrysler, they can get the cash that they need and possibly combine the two companies into a more efficient total operation in time to turn things around. It is a logn shot, but it may be the only shot. If they do nothing, neither comany will survive five years. Then you will see a loss of 100,000s of thousands of jobs.

Just add it to the list
Dana Corp 3000
Delphi 3000
Ford an additional 450
TRW hundreds
...
and so on

imo, and I work for an automotive supplier, we are to reactionary always have been. For years we could have been proactive but it isn't in the nature of the leadership of the business. It's once again too little too late. I greew up in a different state and they hit hard times but while whinning about it they turned it around and brought in other businesses to replace what was lost - because what was lost was never going to recover.

At all levels State/County?and even into the business level we need to stop being reactionary.

I agree. I work for an Automotive supplier and I knew things were going downhill but they reacted like this came out of the blue. Now they are struggling to be proactive and will have to get drastic.

Still not sure what will be better in the long run. But I am leaning towards GM and Chrylser staying seperate. I believe GM is too big already and should be focused on downsizing. Taking over Chysler and then trying to downsize is going to be messy. But who knows what will happen if they don't join. Both going bankrupt? I thought GM was going to file bankruptcy two years ago but they managed to hang on. Now with the economy the way it is who knows.

I am slightly bias and up until recently have always bought Chrysler products and still love their product line. Would hate to see them vanish. Not to mention the mass layoff's that will happen and further stricken our economy.

My contacts at Chrysler haven't called me in two weeks. Not a good sign. If I hadn't gotten a couple of emails from them I would of thought they were laid off already.

UPDATE: Nissan says that they are now interested in buying the 80.1% of stake that Cerberus owns.

And GM, hungry for cash is putting up the parts comapny ACDelco up for sale. GM says that they could now go bankrupt by the begining of 2009, if some type of measures are not taken right know. The only thing is, how can GM do anything to make a profit and STOP burning through a billion dollars every single month!! GM must shed some of their brands, they have way to many and it has gotten to the point where their brands are at competition with themselves. Many analysts say that the only safe brands that GM currently has is Chevy and Cadillac. Every other brand is at risk. To start get rid of Hummer and Buick before it is to late. And then look at eliminating Pontiac in the long run.

How can GM buy and manage Chrylser if they can't even hold on to their own company. If Nissan would buy out Chrysler I believe that it would be better for many metro Detroit families. Whereas if GM bought out Chrysler it would basically shut down the company.

I thnk GM could manage quite nicely if they slashed CEO's outragous salaries and bonus and golden parachuets......they could trim quite a few million a month right there. The higher ups are more equiped to take a hit, a pay freeze or cut than the average line worker is

We have been saying they have been bankrupt for a few years just haven't figured it out yet. But my company is in bankruptcy right now and was spun off form GM years ago.

We both have the same management style and once again it goes back to reactive not proactive. There definetely needs to be a house cleaning, imo

Chrysler doesnt bring much to the table. They have:
Ram Trucks
Dodge exotics - Charger, Challenger, Viper
One of the few surviving minivans
Jeep

Anything else??

That is a nice media concept and I agree that their pay and retirement packages are absurd. However slashing those salaries while it wodl make everyone feel better (except the execs), would have virtually no impact on the company. They are losing billions. A few million in savings is not going to help them.
