right! and thats not how it is anywhere.

90% eh? What census are you looking at? 1970?

Obviously you aren't familiar with these communities.

Rochester Hills: 87.1% White
Troy: 81.3% White
Sterling Heights: 89.1% White
Farmington Hills: 81.9% White
Dearborn: 84.8% White
Birmingham: 95.3% White

Those are numbers straight from this site, so they're obviously pretty close to the actual numbers, since its based on the most recent census. Its clearly obvious that you aren't very familiar with these communities either, if you think that 85% of the population being purely caucasian is "diverse." Understandably so, most people in the Detroit metro area want to act like racism doesn't exist, especially not in their exclusive neck of the woods, yet if you actually look around, its pretty much everywhere. I'm not trying to single out Detroit, because you can find similar examples in so many metro areas, but Detroit definitely has a unique racial past that most cities don't have.

so its racism then that Detroit is mostly a black demographic.

I don't get how its racism because people "chose" to live in a certain area. I think its being blown way out of proportion. I"m sure many will say I'm denying it exists because of that statement.

Perhaps we need to be like Isreal and build fences to separate different ethnic groups. Those people really live in harmony over there

It stemmed from racism because African-American's didnt "choose" to stay in their depressed hovels in Detroit. Most suburbs (if not all at one point) had housing covenants forbidding the sale of homes to African-Americans; people like Orville Hubbard did everything they could to keep minorities out of their cities. It wouldn't be racism if every person, no matter the color of their skin could freely move anywhere they wanted and be accepted there. In Detroit and the surrounding areas, that was never the case.

OK I'll give you that. But why is it even an issue when it was 50 years ago? You're even talking about it in present tense.

What would you like whites to do? Anyone can rise above their current situation. It takes hard work and dedication to follow a dream.
The only true racists left in the world are the ones who accuse everyone of being racist.

To answer your question, I'm not sure what can be done, after so many decades facing discrimination and corruption, I have no idea what can and will be done in Detroit metro. While it does take hard work and perseverance to sometimes get to where you want to be, I still don't think there is an even playing field. Ask a majority of folks in Detroit and they'll tell you the same thing. The real problem with racism is that it doesn't just disappear, it still there, omniscient, but this thread attests to that fact. I don't think I've called anyone racist in here at all, I'm merely pointing out the fact that there is still racism abundant in this area.

Maybe, but I don't think its as prevalent as some make it out to be.
Anyone can be successful at anything they want. I think there will always be some degree of racism and it goes both ways.

If you travel a few hours north of Detroit you'll find many rural locales with stats similar to those of my town's -

White population: 7,492
Black population: 27
American Indian population: 38
Asian population: 12
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander population: 1
Some other race population: 7
Two or more races population: 58

Talk about a lack of diversity!

It's sad to admit, but racism still abides in this area - despite the lack of people to actually be racist against. More than anything I think the racism in this area stems from ignorance. People up here see the Detroit and Flint news bits about murders and robberies and such, and assume it's got to be due to the other races present there. In fact, you wouldn't believe just how many people up north are AFRAID to go to Detroit. I go downstate to see concerts and whatnot a few times a year, and every time I tell my parents they freak out and make me promise to keep my cellphone on, my car windows up while driving through downtown, and plenty of companions with me for protection. seriously. My mom sees a black person and is instantly afraid for her safety. And it's not just her. It's a LOT of people in Northern Michigan. A LOT. And it annoys the crap out of me. What causes that in people? Is it just ignorance? Fear of the unknown?
