Hey how's it going? I have really only started to scratch the surface on this but I am open to any information I can come across.

Here is the situation: I am a USMC MP who will soon finish a 5 year active duty contract and I would like to either re-enlist into either the USAF or USAFR. I know MP is a critical field in the USAF, I would like to lat move/change branches into a critical field of the USAF (not MP). I have a TS/SCI.

Now I do not know if I will be allowed to. If I can't re-enlist active can I enter the reserves, select a critical job (not MP) and later go active with that new job? Any info would be great, I am looking to talk to a prior service recruiter soon.

One more thing, as a prior enlisted, do I have any pull on duty station if I do go active?

I joined the Air Force back in the 1980's. There was a guy, in my basic training flight, who had already completed the Army basic training and time in service. Because he re-enlisted in the Air Force he was required to take the Air Force basic training. However, he didn't have to complete the entire program. He was only there for 3 or 4 weeks.

My guess, and this is only a guess since my basic training was so long ago, is that you will be required to take the Air Force basic training whether you go Active or Reserve. But, you might not need to complete the entire program.

Talking to a recruiter will be your best option.

It has been traditionally hard for prior service members to join the USAF. Your best bet would be the critical career fields like Pararescue and Combat Control.

Like the above poster stated you will get to skip a few weeks of basic.

Back when I came in (1984) as Law Enforcement specialist the Marines sent all MPs to our school for training. We had mixed flights of AF and USMC students and instructors from both services.

I also spent 3 years as AF liaison at Quantico MCB Brig. I has some experience with the Corps.

Get to a USAF recruiter in town and talk to them. You will more than likely have to separate then enlist.

If you are able to join the AF you'll most likely have to keep the same job. The AF actually has a list of MOSs that they'll accept from the Marines. Not sure if MP is one of them. Also not sure if critical MOSs like, Pararescue, are the exception to this.

Why not the Army? I am retired Army and have met many former Marines who came over. Some came through the Army Warrant Officer program. A good friend went MC, USAF, Army. Another Navy to Army. Army to USAF...

Not sure why you considered USAF or USAFR, my thoughts they are very different, but how about Air National Guard?

Etc, etc, etc... A lot of opportunities!

Seriously, I would check with all the recruiters to find out what is available.

Good luck to you!

If your looking to go USAFR why not Air National Guard, almost identical missions, but the guard a lot of times is easier to get into and get training. Also your career field in the guard or reserve is based upon your units tasking. To have a TS/SCI as an MP in the marines means you are most likely guarding a certain type of weapon correct?

What do you want to do is a better question?

I know I won't have to do USAF boot camp as they accept prior service without the need to re-conduct basic.

I haven't looked at the Army but I am very interested in serving (stationed) overseas if I go active. I will have to look more into the Air NG and NG if I end up going reserve.

MP, or Security Forces in the USAF is critical right now. I am looking to get into Intel, which is also critical in the USAF. Is my clearance level enough pull to move into that career of that branch?

Thanks for the info so far.

My husband and I are both prior Marines. I finished my tour and became a full time mom to our special needs child. My husband on the other hand went from Comm in the Marines to Intel in the Army. He did not have to go to boot camp.

The only service that requires Marines to re do bootcamp from my understanding is the Coast Guard. We have a close friend who got out of the Marines and was having a hard time coming back in so he went into the Coast Guard. It was a cake walk for him. I lovingly refer to him as Mr. T because he's so huge. He was pretty much the platoon Sgt in basic the whole time he was there. My husband was originally talking to the Air Force but they weren't accepting anyone when he talked to them. He talked to the Army recruiter and here we are. He also got a nice signing bonus because Intel was critical when he joined.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

I would be extremely surprised if you're able to join the USAF at all. Air National Guard... maybe. Best bet talk to a recruiter and be careful what you wish for.

I know a Marine in recent history who switched being a recruiter in the Marines to the Air Force. The slots are there. If you qualify it'll be harder finding a recruiter to work your package than actually getting it approved. In fact, I do not know anyone personally who qualified and had packages submitted that weren't approved. That said their are a limited number of MOSs that qualify and few other requirements, like TIG/TIS, aside.
