From my experience in the 70's, the USAF brings everyone in late at night. After a bit of "pick 'em up/put 'em down" with whatever luggage you brought, you're rushed through the dining room where you may or may not get to enjoy a "last" meal unless your drill instructor marks you for some egregious act that you may, or may not have, committed.
You're taken to your dorm for another bit of fun and exercise. The goal is, when 50 men or so are put into their racks, they'll stay there. Period.
Uniforms come the next day, right after haircuts I believe.
For the record, I did return to Lackland after tech school and was stationed at Wilford Hall from Oct-ish 1977 to July 1980. Big Willy was a phenomenal place as a 1,000 bed teaching hospital. When we got off of work in the evenings, there were only two dining halls open on the base. One at the hospital and one on the other side of Military Dr i.e. the basic training side of the base. The same dining room that I mentioned above. Since we were tired of the same food, often, we'd cross over to the other side of the base where we were allowed to eat as long as we were in uniform...and didn't act stupid.
Due to the treatment of those just entering the service, we always referred to it as going to "dinner and a floor show."
