I was stationed in Kaiserslautern, Darmstadt and Hanau and loved them all for a total of 12 years. We left due to a RIF in '92, but if that hadn't come along, we'd still be there. That was the downside of the "fall of the wall". I loved Germany, and luckily I can practice the German I took so long to learn with friends!
Hey, my (ex) husband and I were in Aschaffenburg from 1990-1992 (also got caught up in the post closures). I absolutely LOVE Germany and LOVED living there. I've been back several times, most recently last year. In Aschaffenburg the American presence is completely gone, and the housing is being demolished. I was lucky enough to see my former quarters still standing - but next in line to be torn down. It was very bittersweet - but mostly good - to see the changes. We were needed there for awhile, and we did our job and did it well. Now we're not needed there - and it's all good.
To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven. Our season in Germany has passed. Now I'm just a regular tourist - and I can't say that's a bad thing!
I was stationed at Sembach in the late '80s. I loved my time there! I lived off base in Sembach Village and made many German friends there who I still keep in touch with.
They say that Bitburg is finally closing, only 40 years after it was announced.
Sigh...I was one of the last few aircraft maintainers to leave when the operational side was closed (1994). The Housing side and French Caserne held on quite awhile afterwards) Lots of wonderful memories...

Left Aschaffenburg/Babenhausen in 2001. Really enjoyed that city and the large castle. Beautiful. Miss a lot about living over there - except winter weather.
