My wife and I just moved here and none of the places we've eaten at so far have been up to par. Either the fish is great and the cali roll isn't or vice-versa.

Any recomendations?

I haven't actually gone out for sushi in awhile but this place always gets good reviews from what I understand.
It's on Prospect Ave on the east side.

Been there and the fish is great, but their cali rolls are the fake stuff. Fushimi was real all-around, but small portions and the fish was grocery store quality.

I just want some real good sushi.

Oddly enough, one of the best Sushi places I know was back in Alabama. A little place called Mikawa. The ownership is Japanese and they were opened primarily to cater to Japanese that were in the city during the construction of the Toyota engine plant. Even the sign is in Japanese.

In the NYC area, I wanted to eat at Chelsea Market soooo bad, but we never got a chance to. Our local place was Komogashi Too, and it was a strong 2nd place to Mikawa.

Unfortunately, I've found nothing that comes close to either of these places here, even though the prices do.

What about some of the grocery store sushi at Metro Mart? I went there today and it looked pretty good.

I just bought some sushi yesterday from Metro Market because of all the places in the area, they're probably the best. However, I don't think it was that fresh. The sell-by date was dated for today but I think with sushi, you must buy it the morning they make it, not even later in the day, it has to be almost immediately. I don't eat the rolls, only the nagiri sushi or whatever it's called, the slices of fish on top of rice. My friend gets sushi at The Outpost & that is pretty good whenever I have had it.

Thank you for the great feedback on Metro Market! I was tempted to try some myself yesterday, but as you've said, it's best when it's freshly made. I will have to try it next time (maybe even today). The outpost sounds interesting, albeit a bit of a drive for us.

Metro Mart sushi is half a step above gas station sushi.

I'm going to try screaming tuna.
