MinnPost - Cityscape: MSP is still the nation's 14th largest metro economy, despite sharp decline in 2009 GDP

It's important to measure metro economies because they are the basic geographic units of global competition. MSP retained its rank as the nation's 14th largest metro economy, passing Detroit while being passed by Phoenix, despite Arizona's housing miseries. Among the top 20 metro economies, Detroit, St. Louis and Miami were among biggest losers in 2009 while Houston, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., were the only metros posting gains.

In the Upper Midwest, MSP continues to dominate, roughly matching the combined output of its four nearest rivals — Milwaukee, Omaha, Des Moines and Madison. But its 2009 performance was among the weakest in the region (along with Sioux City and Mankato) while Sioux Falls, Bismarck and Fargo each posted modest gains.

Yeah, but it seems like we took a hit compared to the last estimates I saw, putting us over $200B. I wonder if the recession did that or if the sources use different data. Most estimates place us ahead of Detroit.

We are 16th largest in terms of population, so being the 14th largest economy implies that we more than pull our weight, not bad!

And we put up with this awful weather just to have the 14th best economy in the nation? 14th isn't good.

Well, given the fact that metro Detroit has a substantially larger population than the Twin Cities, it is quite an accomplishment and a good indicator of how strong our economy is.

I suspect most people live in the Twin Cities for some other reason.

If I had a choice, I would still be up there. While our move to Atlanta has been a good one in some respects, and while I have nothing at all against Atlanta, I would much rather live in the more cooperative and pro-education atmosphere of the Twin Cities than the edgier atmosphere down here.

Besides, the cold weather has benefits ... there aren't any termites up there, or fire ants, or poisonous spiders or little sand scorpions, and there isn't any kudzu killing the local trees.

The Detroit Metro area is larger in population, so yeah, it's pretty significant.

Also, on a national (even international) scale, Detroit is much more recognizable.

Yeah, since the weather in the Twin Cities is SOOOOOOOOOO much different than Chicago, Boston, Detroit, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia... Give me a break.

There are really only about 15 important metros in the country in terms of GDP, population, TV Markets, etc. and the Twin Cities fall in that group. So, fall back and go move to Des Moines if you can't handle the weather or the economy. DUECES!
