Pretty typical for the 3rd week in Jan. Enjoy today, high in the mid 30's.

Coldest low temperatures I have found this Tuesday morning was -38F at Babbitt in St Louis County and -38F in Thorhult in northwestern Beltrami county. Both from cooperative observers.

we had -24.5 on the weather station and -22 on the car coming this morning in Chisago Co., didn't seem too bad as there really wasn't much wind.

You could tell where all the power plants were this morning--the vapor from the emissions looked like the area had been bombed. Crossing the river on the Cedar Ave bridge you get a good span of the horizon from past Bloomington across Minneapolis, St. Paul and east. White plumes of vapor dotting the skyline looked like an apocalyptical movie scene.

Hey Dan--that clipper coming through Friday--best guess on snowfall totals and when it might hit? It looks like the track is going to take the snow right where we need to drive this weekend....figures . NWS online doesn't have any info other than 'several inches". Need to know if we need to move up our departure time!

Hi there....

I does appear that todays model output brings the surface low from grand forks-fargo southeast toward st cloud then eau claire with most of the light snow along and north and east of this track. at the moment thinking 1-2 inches in this region including bemidj-little falls-duluth-brainerd. looks like much less in the twin cities metro (dusting). fast moving system and limited moisture....

System timing looks like mostly a Thursday night event moving into far northwest Minnesota later thur afternoon and then spreading southeast with the snow exiting eastern Minnesota Friday late morning.

Ok, thanks! 2 inches I can deal with, 10 would be a different story .

Tonight the house is doing the loud knocking from expansion. Scares me every time even though I know it's nothing. The cats jumped and ran to the patio door and I turned on the lights when hubby reminded me it was just from the cold. I remember several years ago on the radio when Joe Soucheray had a caller who thought it was the home show ask him about this. He had just moved here and Joe told him all sorts of things like the house was ready to fall down and he had to get his wife and kids out of there now. Poor guy probably was in a total panic after that call, never heard if anything came of it bu totally believable if one had never heard it before and didn't know any better.

If you haven't been up north during brutal cold, like -40° air temp cold, it's an experience. The sap in the pine trees pops and it sounds like gunshots. That is a different kind of cold. This should be the last or close to the last of any prolonged cold. We will see a day here and there but not a week's worth, typically. Sun is setting later too!
