I'm trying to find salary and benefits on UM's site...but it doesn't seem super straight-forward (and some of the links/docs. are corrupted). Or maybe I'm being dumb right now. I know it depends on your BU, but just curious about salary midpoints, vacation/sick leave, etc.

Also, if you've worked there, what was the culture like? What departments did you like/dislike? I am currently at UCSF and it's well-known here that everyone, from mail room to surgeons, is expected to work fairly endlessly and expectations are not reasonable. But most people are very nice to work with, which makes it better.

Sorry to be a skeptic, but the U is trying to squeeze money out of the state legislature. I wonder if they are trying to lay low on adminstrative costs, since they've been challenged on that after the New York Times called them out for excess expenses (and tuition). Are they secretive when you call, too?

The U of MN is one of the least expensive state flagships in the country

Well, in all honesty, I don't know if they are being secretive or if they just have a poorly designed website. One of things I prefer about government jobs is that they usually just post the salary range with the job announcement. I don't really like that weird game in the private industry. But this information at UMN seems unusually difficult to find. I like to know the salary because, besides the obvious, titles don't always match the actual job that well and it's another clue about what is really involved in the position. I'll keep looking...

What is this class "state flagship" you speak of? Is it really a relevant comparison. The U of M has been given a place in the Constitution based on the promise of being affordable for any capable student. Is that the conditions under which these "flagships" operate? The WSJ article says:

The University of Minnesota illustrates the trend. Its main Twin Cities campus had the largest share of employees classified as "executive/administrative and managerial" among the 72 "very-high-research" public universities in the 2011-12 academic year, according to data compiled by the U.S. Department of Education. Minnesota officials say the figures are misleading because not all schools report administrative spending the same way.

Similar schools to the U of MN--all the Big 10 Schools and similar schools in other states--usually the largest state school in the state. It's a pretty common term and commonly understood in the college world...

Salaries are public info, so you can search here:

Minnesota Public Employee Salaries

Benefits summaries here:

Benefits Summaries for Prospective Employees

You can probably dig around for more specific benefits info in the links to the left side of that page.

Pretty impressive, especially the whole string of athetic coaches. "Being competitive" sure imposes a lot of cost, which for the people who'd care less if there were any teams at all is kind of a bummer. But beyond that, pages and pages of people paid like specialist doctors! Do they really earn it? I'm guessing since the U asks for more and more money on top of double-digit tuition increases, these $400k and up profs don't really bring enough income by themselves.

Check out this chart. The gynecologist field doesn't even make it to U of M prof level!

Postsecondary Teachers

Median annual wages, May 2010
Postsecondary Teachers $62,050

Education, Training, and Library Occupations $45,690

Total, All Occupations $33,840

Note: All Occupations includes all occupations in the U.S. Economy.
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment Statistics

The median annual wage of postsecondary teachers was $62,050 in May 2010. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $30,720, and the top 10 percent earned more than $130,510.
Or work at a public university and make a half million!

More digging: In the Onestop section of the U's site, they give the annual cost at the 13 credit rate. But when you go to the site where they talk about 4 year graduation, they say "15 to 18 credits". Now a college-able student can surely add up the real tuition cost, but it seems to me that if you calculate the 15 to 18 credit cost, the total is no longer lower. The average if above $8000.

I think it's just the website, not a conspiracy or an active attempt to hide information (as I remember in years past their careers website being rather unhelpful, too), but it is also true that the U has had some rather negative national attention in recent months following that WSJ article. I think people are going to be talking about that for quite some time.
