My father was born in Jackson and have been there a few times. I just don't like the deep south. Too hot and humid, too many poisonous critters and no winter to freeze out crime. I had some fun in Gulfport/Biloxi but I would not want to live there.

What's the fun in Biloxi? I agree Mississippi is the worst state despite competition from states like Louisiana, Georgia, Ohio, and Michigan being fierce.

The Biloxi area has 11 casinos, it's unofficially coined as, "The South's Playground"

Look at ColdAilment's post above to see the fun in Biloxi.

Louisiana has Mardi Gras, gumbo, crawfish, zydeco, LSU football, the Superdome, and much more.

Georgia has beautiful mountains in the north part of the state. Along with a beautiful Atlantic coast to go with it. Don't forget Atlanta with MARTA. Sports-wise, You get plenty of options in Atlanta. Georgia Tech, Falcons, Braves, and Hawks.

Savannah has awesome historical buildings. If you ever see Savannah (And i know you probably won't, because i remember your comment saying you're staying away from the South because of a movie that's over 45 years old), you should see them.

Ohio doesn't have much. It's a Rust Belt state, and i do know it's where Wendy's is headquartered. It also has the most astronauts, too. (Is Ohio really that bad that it makes people want to leave the earth?) on a positive note, Ohio is a good sports state. Ohio State, Bengals and Cavaliers are all good.

Most of Michigan's lower peninsula is not that good, either. Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, Pontiac, Highland Park and River Rouge are all hellholes that were once good, but ruined by the unions. UP is beautiful, though. Nice, gorgeous scenery. Marquette is nice. Houghton is nice. Sault Ste. Marie is on the Canadian border.

So there. This comment has explained to you that the other four states you've mentioned aren't all that bad.

I personally wouldn't want to freeze my butt off in Michigan for 5 months per year.

I was kidding about staying away from the South after watching Deliverance, obviously. Although I can imagine the movie actually did do a lot of damage to the image of the South.

Seeing Detroit would be the only reason for me to ever travel back to the US and now I've gotten interested in Biloxi I might actually book a domestic flight to see it while visiting Detroit.

For me, at least, finding out which is the worst is fairly easy process.

1. Which areas of the state, back when old-fashioned analog TV (without cable) was the thing, could not pick up TV or FM radio from any of the following cities: Jackson, Memphis, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Birmingham. (beyond what that implies about access to mainstream pop culture, it also implies a long drive to whatever it is you are looking for relative how common what you're looking for is).

2. Within those areas where you couldn't get terrestrial radio or tv, which areas are the most economically decrepit.

3. Which areas are more than 15 miles from a four-lane road of any sort.

Whichever area you discover qualifies for all three points is your likely answer.

Look, don't shoot the mesenger here. I would not live in that place either. And for that matter, MUCH of Alabama, or just the deep south in general. I'm trying to get out myself. But the people who might buy your home aren't moving here from somewhere else, so you are left selling to people who are just looking for ANOTHER house. That's it. We don't have an influx of out of towners coming here.

Admittedly, Birmingham does have some influx, but they are only high income earners, and my home isn't big enough for those people. Plus, the trend in Birmingham, like many other urban cities, is to move CLOSER to the city, not farther. I'm 18 miles out of downtown. That's too far for the new breed of homebuyers and especially first time homebuyers.

It's all cyclical I suppose.

Not far from accurate, actually. Alabama is #2. Or #49, depending on what stat we are talking about

However, just try to beat the Crimson Tide in football. Impossible.

Ole Miss has done it twice in a row.
