Homemade bomb found at Mississippi middle school | AL.com

Quote:
A bomb was found at a middle school in Vicksburg, Mississippi on Wednesday. The school was evacuated, and the device was detonated without injury.

The Vicksburg Warren School District confirmed a bomb threat was reported at Warren Central Junior High School shortly before 12:15 p.m.

The Vicksburg Police Department did not return calls to AL.com. But media reports state the school was evacuated while authorities searched and a bomb squad responded.

A homemade improvised explosive device was found in a backpack in the library.

WJTV in Jackson reports the device was detonated in a field outside the school. No one was injured.

The school remained in shutdown, and parents were not allowed to pick up their children during this time. WAPT Jackson reports the grounds were deemed safe close to 3:15 p.m.

Two students - one of whom was 13 - were detained, according to the news station. Charges were not immediately filed.

Another student reportedly told school staff a classmate showed him the device he brought to school.

The school system reports that all students are safe and accounted for.

Personally, I'm glad it didn't. There were 2, 13 year old kids who made up some kind if small explosive device. It's certainly a big deal to them and their parents, but on a nationwide scale it doesn't really amount to much.

Times have really changed. I remember wasting a lot of hours as a kid trying to make big firecrackers from small firecrackers. Now I would be charged with making an IED.

That's what things are like now, unfortunately.

The "Cherry Bombs and M-80's" my friends and I set off around the 4th of July every summer in the 1950s would get a kid and his parents arrested today. Has anyone besides me made the connection between increased violence and all of the PC Do Gooders of today?

We did this at church camp when I was a teen. We made what we called a bottle rocket bomb. We got a lecturer and that was it. I guess today we would have been arrested.
