I am going to take a weekend vacation to Mississippi - can anyone tell me where I should go? Are there any places I should stay away from? I hear a lot of negative stereotypes about the area, are any of them true? Will anything surprise me? I just want to be prepared...

Thanks for any help you can give!

What did you ideally want to do here? Go Fishing, Gamble, Hunt, Eat?

Best vacation in Mississippi is staying at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, hitting the pool and spa during the day and the casinos and restaurants at night. And for time on the ocean, take the ferry out to Ship Island for green gulf waters and white-sand beaches, or take a charter boat for some deep-sea fishing, or hit one of the golf courses along the Coast or do some shopping and eating in quaint Ocean Springs.

If you like history, you want to see the antebullum homes of Natchez, battlefields of Vicksburg, and the downtown Square in Oxford and home of William Faulkner.

If you have a stopover in Jackson, stay either at the gorgeous Fairview Inn or the King Edward Hilton Garden Inn, do some shopping at the Renaissance, go walking around the Reservoir and hit a waterside bar, and perhaps catch a show at the local theatre or art museum and hit one of Jackson's great restaurants (there are a good number of them).

Seriously, why would you go vacationing at at place you have heard nothing good about? Why spend your time and money coming here?
Your response isn't helpful. Maybe you need to get out more. The image of Mississippi in many parts of the country is horrible. Maybe rightfully deserved in part because of the past history and some current attitudes--like yours--and mostly undeserved. But it is a fact and you can't blame people for inquiring. It would be stupid on their part to blissfully ignore rumblings of problems when traveling to an unknown area. At least they are willing to give us a try and could become ambassadors of good will. Let's welcome them and stop with the snide remarks.

You are probably right, but people generally find what they are looking for.

Oh come on. I know when a concern is legit or not. To me all that question was to start a debate about how racist Ms is.

That was my first impression as well. Why would you choose to vacation in a place that you had heard nothing but bad things about?

And what on earth would surprise you? It's not like your traveling to the moon?

Mississippi is a beautiful state! Yes, there are problems. Yes, racism exists. But no more so in Mississippi than in many other states. As a matter of fact, the most racially divided place I've ever lived is Indianapolis, Indiana. And I've lived all over this country and over-seas.

You say you are going to "visit Mississippi". Mississippi covers a lot of land. Are you going to spend a month and see the entire state? Or did you have an area in mind? I always suggest folks go to Oxford! I think it's the best part of our state.

As a devout Mississippi State fan, I do not concur with this notion.

That is ridiculous. There is nothing to suggest the concern is not legit. What I think is you are a Mississippian--a native. And you do not realize the perceptions outside of the state that are held about Mississippi. If you did, you would understand the concern and be ready to address the misapprehensions and not judge them illegit. You are simply naive.

Ok...you have to admit that Oxford is prettier than Starkville.
