I'm not saying anything about Browning...what I'm saying is that, it's not the only place on the face of the earth with problems. Each and every place - city/town/community/etc - has it's problems. But there are good people in those places and there's no need to completely say or imply that each and every single one of them are involved in some way, or totally "bad". I've been to places, that I can label "sh1tholes", but that's being totally ingornant...because I know that there are nice people there, who I have met and who 'try' to make it a better place. As for not shopping, outrageous prices of this or that in certain places...as I've mentioned before, take it up with the leaders - chamber of commerce.
As for your question...I can't answer that, thats where the editorial comes in, I'm sure you'll get all sorts of answers regarding thugs and perverts.

[[[And Elkhunter....I can be ignornant too!!!...Before y'all point fingers, remember there are three pointing back at you ROFLMFAO!]]]

I'm wondering if any of the folks WAAAY back in this thread ever did move to Browning, and if you're still here, why not come back and tell us of your experiences? I seem to recall one intended to be a middle-school teacher and the other to help at a senior center of some sort.

I know.. read all the way through those postings and it's like you always wonder what happened to the main character of that book :P..

or in fact THAT BOOK.. what was it :P.. some guy picks a random town to write about.. talks about it here. but never came back to let the people know what it was :P

where is the final chapter of this story lol.. oh well..

Browning has always been the MT bad boy town.. I grew up in a little po-dunk town south of the res called Dupuyer (soon to be ghost town at the rate it's going).. spent time IN and around Browning and the res.. and like many stated here.. there are plenty of bad.. but there are probably even a greater number of Good .. they just don't make the most noise :P (or show up on some stats report)

my family never really experienced the discrimination much with people no the res, but then to us they are just neighbors.. .. eaten at their dinner tables.. and they at ate ours...

respect the people.. (race/color independent) and most often you will get the same in return.. go with perceived ideas.. and you'll most likely see things as how you envision despite what may be the truly be

Haha, exactly.. and in fact there's a thread here somewhere with just that, someone wanted to write a book set in Browning, but had never been there and had no clue... I did like the fictional description of the town I came up with for 'em to use, tho

I'll just say what everyone in the know is already thinking... Young white teacher was probably murdered in racial motivated violence...

Seriously, I've been to Browning and I've been to the Middle East. I think white people are safer in Iraq... And when they Iraqis say the are oppressed it actually has some basis in reality.

/end thread

I am a white woman, and have been to Browning, and in many of the homes there. Have not been killed yet. I have always had good experiences up there, but find the families to be so messed up with violence, and rampant abuse.

I will admit, I don't spend the night there, I go to a hotel in Cut Bank.

We stayed in East Glacier cause we weren't welcomed in Browning. We were told to move on to Cut Bank. I walked into the gas station there to get a snack, got bumped by each native walking in the store past me then got nasty looks. One waved a knife at me. I got back into my work truck and left ASAP. Only place I was OK was the casino.

I remember reading this post years ago and was looking at my route went through Montana, and Browning and Wolf Point both were not welcoming to me nor my family. Wolf Point my wife went to do gas, the outside machine didn't work. She went inside to pre pay then. They swiped the card, she went out, and the pump wasn't ready. She went back in to check they re-swiped the card and she went out. She then called me as I was on the rails working. I came over and she showed me the receipts, all authorized purchases. But no Product. I went inside and asked for them to fix it. I was courteous and assuming it was just accident. I said I don't need money back just let us get the amount in fuel like we paid for. As I headed out the door they laughed at me. I went to the pump, my wife was upset. I started it and it started It gave me 50 cents. I couldn't believe it at that point. I went back in politely asked again to correct the amount. Went out and it was 51 cents. I knew they weren't going to cooperate and make good on what they did. Then at Albertsons we went shopping our groceries were bagged horribly with a grin. The eggs were put under cans, Our bread was set under the milk. I'm spending and supporting locals and I got this kind of treatment. I was happy when we got to Sydney and moved on westward of I 90. Shelby and Havre were awesome towns though so Good and bad.

This thread has to be a set-up. Has to be. Who in their right mind?

Default Not a set-up

Unfortunately this is completely for real. There is so much racism between the native americans and white people in certain areas of Montana (especially Browning and Rocky Boy (havre)) I grew up in havre and played basketball against both teams. We were terrified to play them. They were very physical (for an 8th grade basketball game) and we came away with bruises, black eyes, etc. It was so bad that our school in havre stopped inviting these teams to our tournament because they were such bad players. And it was the parents too. They were yelling and cussing as us kids when we would score. And this was 8th grade!!

You cant group them all in this category, however, some of them are very nice people...unfortunately it is the rude ones that make up the terrible stereotypes. Nothing in this thread surprises me. I worked at a retail store in Havre when I was in high school and was discriminated against because I was white multiple times. I was always very friendly to them but many of them were just extremely rude. One time i asked a native customer if i could help her with anything, she say the cleaning guy behind me (who was native) and completely ignored me, called to him to come help her. I was appalled. Had to get out of that place!
