Not everyone in foreclosure bit off more than they could chew. Many lost their jobs and had to relocate to other parts of the country to get another comparable job. Even a modest mortgage (in our case, $1200 per month) is impossible to keep up with if there are several months of joblessness PLUS having to pay rent in a new community. Having the recommended three-months'-worth of savings only gets you so far when you have to use that money to relocate while also paying whatever necessary expenses (food, gasoline) you have.
Ahh yes...But the original question was, Is it ethical to walk away from a mortgage that you can afford? If you don't have a job, you can't afford your mortgage. Different story alltogether...

It is people making a choice to walk, not those having to walk due to necessity...

There is empathy for those who are losing their jobs. There is no empathy for the idiots that got themselves into a heap load of trouble by trying to outdo the Joneses.

Nope. This is reasonable man stuff. No indication of how hard they could get hit.

Get over it. This is, for some, the equivalnet of an ecomomic meteorite strike.

Could happen to anyone, anytime...do you plan for it?

You're telling me college education savings, insurance payments, etc weren't calculated in someone's budget before they bought a house? I find that a little hard to believe.

You've got your perception, I have mine. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Yes, for those who suffered from the actions of others who bit off more than they could chew. As I said, different story.

I live on the planet called "I don't blame others for my mistakes." It's really a nice place... You should visit sometime...
