After reading some of the posts here, I have to chime in on Titanic (Mark S. you cracked me up with the 'last 18 hours of Titanic' dig).
I enjoyed Titanic from the historical aspect (Capt. Smith, Molly Brown, J. Bruce Ismay) but there was one thing I had a major issue with: Do you know how freakin cold that water is???? On the night of the disaster the water was near 30 degrees (It's salt water). They were walking through it with nary a comment about it. I've been in 35 degree water. It's agony.
I can't stand "Oscar Bait" movies. You know the type. Inspirational, based on a true story, guaranteed to leave you in tears, etc. The kind of movie that American Dad made fun of in the "Tearjerker" 007 spoof episode.
You mean like Saving Mr. Banks?
Lauded by critics. It'll do well at the box office and clean up at the Oscars. It's also complete BS. It's basically a commercial whitewashing of Disney's character at the expense of an author.
The Lord of the Rings series. LOVED the books, read them annually for years on Christmas vacation, like visiting an old friend.
HATED OMG HATE the hobbits, especially Frodo and Sam, as portrayed in the movies. I can't even express how painful it is to watch those two. Bilbo, Merry and Pippin not much better. The rest was pretty well done but I can't watch. I watch a bit here and there on cable but can only stomach about 10 minutes at a time.
" Saving Private Ryan" it started out epic but the plot became strictly movie quality and it became just that... you knew it was only a movie. Not a masterpiece, still it was far better than " Pearl Harbor". "Glory" was much better.
A friend of mine insisted that Private Ryan is a stunning 20-minute invasion scene, followed by a formulaic Western. The wagon train sets off, has an encounter with the Indians (Steamboat Willie), pushes deeper into Indian territory, finds the bloodied-but-still-plucky settlers, circles the wagons for a fight against the odds and is finally rescued by the cavalry in the nick of time. John Wayne dies.
if EVERYONE you know, (or even a plurality of people you know) LOVES those movies, then you need to find a new group of friends or a different situation.
I hate gangster movies, so I'm not at all fond of Martin Scorsese movies in general.
Godfather was good enough, but was bored by the sequels.
