I just finished watching the shining again for the first time in years and it still gives me goosebumps. I haven't seen the Exorcist for several years now but as I remember it, it will still be the scariest of all time.
The Exorcist, I believe is the most frightening movie ever made. In part because most every other horror movie made before that had a "monster" you could see or fight.
We could all defeat vampires, were wolves, mutants, and even ghosts.
They were external forces attacking you.
A demon, a cast down angel with a malevolent hate for humanity was something you could not detect with your five senses and once possession was complete, you could do nothing to help yourself.
Indeed there was nothing any man could do. Only the power of God could save you in some occasions. This movie was scary because it clawed at our psychology and our belief in our own ability to conquer any type of "monster".
"The Changeling" and "Ghost Story" are a different kind of horror movie that I find as enjoyable as the "Exorcist" for a different reason.
We all like a mystery and the search to solve the mystery, combine that with a good ghost story and old money, power, and priveledge; you have a winner.
I also liked George C. Scott , Trish Van DeVere, and other "character" actors of that time. They had more depth and character without relying on "looks" to make the movie.
Many times when people speak of re-making the old classics, there are no character actors of today that can pull it off.
As a kid of 9 or 10 at home with my sisters at night, "night of the living dead" scared me to death. My mother worked night and left us alone with our downstairs neighbor to check on us if we needed something.
Lastly, "Insidious" was surprisingly scary to me and you must see it on the big screen in order to catch all the small things that are going on in the movie.
I HATE the Saw movies. I don't care if they got over-rated, too annoying, old, etc. They scare the living daylights out of me and I'll never watch another one as long as I live ever. The Amityville Horror was heinous too, every time I see a house with similar upstairs windows I check to see if there are red eyes in them. ::shudder::
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the Conjuring. I've been watching horror movies for over 30 years and for some reason that one makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. I can't wait to see part 2.

Part 2 is slightly better than the original IMHO.
Go see it.
