For me it's The Shining. Something about the past mixing with the present - it really freaked me out because it's an idea that genuinely terrifies me.

The Sentinel (1977) is also really good. The Changeling with George C. Scott is superb ghost story - really well done. I also like the Insidious movies. Recently watched the first Conjuring and liked it a lot too. I love supernatural horror.

Also, though not on the scariest ever list, I just watched The Awakening tonight and it's a first class ghost story - really well done, IMHO.

Yes!!!! That movie is super creepy and done so well. I saw this at a slumber party long time ago and couldn't sleep that night.
