It was pretty good exploitation/horror film for its time. There was a trend of these in that time period. Films like I spit on your grave and Fight for your life were examples of this.

Some of these films were heavily cut or even banned. The UK called them "Video Nasties." The X rating was used for some horror films for violence.

I saw both versions of LHOL. The 2009 version was just okay, and I don't remember a lot about the original. I don't remember the violence being over the top.

One move that really bothered me was I Spit on Your Grave. Original and remake. I couldn't get through either movie. I was watching the first one years ago and had to stop after the bathroom scene (where one of the rapists is turned into a philly). I tapped out.

I started watching the remake and had to stop before the initial rape scene. I knew it was coming, because I'm familiar with the story, and I just couldn't hang. I had to tap out. Movie violence normally doesn't bother me, both ISYGs did me in.

I like the gritty and creepy look of the original, but yeah, it's extreme and the acting is rough. The remake was decent, but most over the top with what felt like an extra scene added at the end.
