I am just wondering if a Blu-Ray player and the DVD's deliver their highly reputated performance with a Hi Def 1080i television. Or....does one really need to move up to a 1080p HDTV in order to experience the superb picture quality that is so remarked about with BR discs? I have a 32" HDTV with 1080i and I also have the Blu-Ray player but most times I am not seeing this "drawn into the film" quality that is so talked about. Is it me? Are my eyes going? What are your experiences out there. I am curious. Thanks for all replies.

Blu-Ray provides HD signal to 1080i TVs. 1080p MIGHT look better but 1080i is certainly HD; broadcast and cable HD is 1080i.

My understanding is that you should definitely see a difference with Blu-Ray even if you don't have a 1080p set. You may have to experiment with your connections and settings. I would ask your question over here Blu-ray Forum - Blu-ray Community and Forums

You will definintely see a bit difference on your BlueRay from your standard DVD player. Even the "upscaling" DVDs look much better.

Now, if go out and get yourself a 1080p with 120hz refresh rate and capable of 24f, you will see a DRAMATIC difference in image quality.

That there is a dramatic improvement in DVD between upscaled and not is something I've never seen demonstrated. I've had and have several upscalers and I think upscaling is a hype. The only time I see a difference is squinting at test patterns and I mean squinting.

The size of a TV and how close you sit to it makes the difference. 1080P makes a difference on, say, a 52 inch set from 6 or less feet away. I can see the difference.
Also, of course, you get the benefit of better sound - true HD sound.

Are you serious Dd714? A 52" set and sitting 6 feet OR LESS away? I'm not expert but that seems awfully close to me? I would think that the larger the screen the more it allows you/one to sit further away from it. Wouldn't sitting too close be bad for the eyes anyway? And at 52" why would anyone need to sit that close to it?

Nope. The rules for hidef are different. Throw out those old rules. When you had the tube TV's you didn't want to sit too close because then you would see all the pixels and artifacts in the picture.
With high def it's just the opposite. You loose the benefit of a high def TV the farther you sit aways. I wouldn't even recommend a hi def tv of 32 inch or less for a viewing distance of 12 feet or more.
For 52 inch high def a good viewing distance is about 8 to 12 feet but sometimes late at night when I want to be totally immersed into a film and get the IMAX effect I want to pull the chair way up and sit about 5 or 6 feet from the screen and the effect is glorious for any highdef broadcasts and you can definetly tell the difference with bluerays and 1080p vs 1080i or 720p.
Sitting to close to a TV is not bad for your eyes (within limits, you don't need to watch from 2 inches away) - another relic of the tube era. Throw those old wives tales away from your memory.

OK, consider it done. And you are not the only source I have heard this from but it just didn't seem to make sense to me as I explained in my previous post. Thanks for the information. Unfortunately I do have a 32" 1080i at this time and even though I would LOVE to upgrade to a much larger screen with 1080p it is just not financially feasible at this time. So the Blu-Ray will have to deal with the HDTV at 32" and 1080i, LOL.
