Okay the year is now 1988, and whopping 32 songs, excluding "Faith" by George Michael which rolled over from 1987, reached the top. Since the modern Billboard Hot 100 started 57 years ago in August 1958, 1988 and 1989 rank in second place with the most number of songs to reach #1. 1974 is in first place.
So of these 33 songs, which is your favorite? To me this is a very diverse list of hit singles, with a weird mix of artists. Among them is the last #1 song by any member of the Beatles as well as a comeback hit by the Beach Boys, sans Brian Wilson.
Good luck!

Y'all can throw things at me.. I gave Billy Ocean the vote.. That song is just one that i'll turn the radio up when it comes on..
Another strong effort from Whitney Houston.. Look Away by Chicago is a powerful ballad. And I even loved George Harrison's song "(This song's just) Six Words Long".. Man in the Mirror, perhaps, MJ's best single..
This is the year I started moving away from pop to country music. Garth Brooks, Clint Black, etc, the 'new' generation of country artists had more of that early/mid 80's sound, with steel guitars, to them than the pop artists did. MTV started moving towards rap music.. This was the beginning of the end.

Nothing wrong with Billy Ocean, I see some have voted for under dog artists like Debbie Gibson and Richard Marx as opposed to Michael Jackson and other big names.
What a great year for music, Iron Maiden and Metallica put out their best albums that year as well
