Attention Kiss fans....on this day their debut album "Kiss" was released.
February 18th 1974 on Casablanca Records and Tapes.
Their debut album is chockful of good songs....
"Strutter"
"Deuce"
"Black Diamond"
"Firehouse"
"Cold Gin"....my fave....written by Ace Frehley...but he was not confident to sing it,
so Gene Simmons does the lead vocals.
"100,000 Years"
Those are all songs I really like...and they are also on "Double Platinum"...so I didn't need to
get the album.
The album sold poorly and the record company ordered Kiss to go back into the studio and record another song ..."Kissin' Time" to try to get a hit single ...the band hated the song....it was a cover, an oldie that Bobby Rydell has a hit with in 1959...
In July 1974 ...""Kissin" Time" was added to the songs on the album....so there are about 75,000
early copies without the extra song...not sure if those are worth more to collectors.
On March 29th 1974, Kiss went on "The Mike Douglas Show" ...they performed "Firehouse"
then only Gene Simmons sat down to chat...another guest, comedian Totie Fields said "Wouldn't it be funny if under all that make up he's a nice jewish boy?"....That caught Gene off guard...and he muttered..
"Wouldn't you like to know"...Then Totie Fields retorted, "You can't hide the hook"...refering to his nose....giving him away...funny stuff ...you can see it all on youtube....great stuff...
2003 - 100 people died after pyrotechnics ignited a club during a gig by Great White in West Warwick, Rhode Island. Great White guitarist Ty Longley was also killed in the accident. Two brothers who owned the club were charged, along with the former tour manager with involuntary manslaughter. Foam soundproofing material at the edge of the stage set alight and the blaze spread quickly in the one-story wooden building as fans all tried to escape through the same exit. Great White began a tour in July 2003 to raise money for the survivors and families of victims.
Dead Musicians born on this day:
1967 - Kurt Cobain guitarist, singer, songwriter with Nirvana.
1950 - Walter Becker, bass, guitar, vocals, songwriter with American group Steely Dan.
1946 - J Geils, American guitarist, with The J. Geils Band.
Missed this one yesterday...I had no computer access...
Yes released their third album.."The Yes Album"
Released on February 19th 1971 on Atlantic Records.
Recorded fall of 1970 at Advision Studios, London.
Produced by Eddie Offord.
Their first two album did not sell well...there were on thin ice with Atlantic Records...
their previous album, "Time and Word" featured lots of orchestration...guitarist Peter Banks
hated that he had little to do on the album and quit (or was fired...hard to say)....
they replaced Banks with Steve Howe ....a brilliant guitar player, he help take the band to the next level.
This album is amazingly good ...even 52 years later....and my fave Yes song of all time is on the album,
"Starship Trooper"....an increbible 9 and a half minute masterpiece....some sections (actually many sections) are really hard to play...the only section that I play regularly is the final 5 minute section, "Wurm",
it is only three chords G to E flat to C ....all played in "C shape" with an extra note on the high E string,
so sool sounding ...the entire song is "studio" flanged ..there were no flanger pedals back 1970....
producer Eddie Offord smartly just added a slight phase/flange which added warmth....
it's a song where you don't want it to end...with both the lead solo and organ both building in intensity...
Other memorable tracks include....
"Yours Is No Disgrace"....the lyric line "morning glory, caesars palace" problem insoired by an early US
tour they did in 1970 ...playing Las Vegas ...where there is a Caesars Palace Casino" (opened circa 1966).
"Perpetual Change"....another good one in a similar style.
"I've See All Good People"....love it ....the coda when Jon Anderson keeps repeating the lyric line...""I've Seen All Good People turn there heads each day, so satisfied, I'm on my way..."....still have no idea what it means...but just like Starship Trooper ....I don't want it to end ...I keep turning the volume up during the long fade out...Jon Anderson's unique distinctive voice....not a falsetto...naturally high pitched..he is tiny ...5'5" tall as compared to big 6'4" Chris Squire on bass ...and what a bass player he was....playing chords on his Rickenbacker ...then spliting tye signal into two separate amp rigs ...one of which is usually distorted....creating a huge thick sound....all the musicians in the band were top notch ...including drummer Bill Bruford....one of the best...he left a couple of albums later to play with King Crimson.
02/21/1967 - Pink Floyd start recording The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios ....The Beatles were recording Sgt. Pepper at the same time...
The Beatles did poke the heads over to check out to see what Pink Floyd were doing and Pink Floyd were
in awe of The Beatles and did likewise.
