Responses to this may show a generational bias, but I'd have to vote for the ten year period of 1964-1973, a decade which had the finest of The Beatles, The Stones, Dylan, Bowie, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Motown, Cat Stevens, Sly & Family Stone, CCR, Velvet Underground
The '60's because of the convergence of musical genres.
You obviously had the British Invasion and Motown and home grown rock 'n roll,
but you also had Sinatra and Tony Bennett doing some of their best work,
Miles Davis and other jazz founders stretching in new directions.
The '60's is when it all came together, but alas, it wouldn't last.
