You have nothing to worry about. South Carolina certainly isn't the most liberal place in the world, but I would bet serious money on the idea that no one would stop your husband and son simply because they are of a darker complexion. I used to teach high school in Myrtle Beach and taught so many ESL students who really were Latino; it's not just white rednecks around here!
Our family travels to Myrtle Beach from the Midwest every year, I am what even Greeks would call a taller, darker Greek, (I'm also missing the Greek god part :-) as an example while shopping at stores I've had smaller Spanish ladies ask me to get stuff down off the shelves for them in Spanish.
I have never had an issue, or have felt that I was being profiled.
Now if I was to get pulled over anywhere and an officer walks up to my window to ask me for my license, which one do you think would get me profiled, if I had a blank stare and said ( um kai? ) or if i said, good morning officer let me get that out of my wallet for you, my registration and insurance is in my glove box did you need that too, could you tell me why I'm being pulled over sir.
