We're considering an opportunity to move to Nashville for a job near Franklin. We have two elementary age kids, and don't know much about the Nashville area. The top priority is to find a family friendly area with excellent schools. One child plays hockey, so that's a consideration as well. But it is secondary to top schools.

Any suggestions on the best places in reasonable driving distance to Franklin with great schools? Any online resources to get school ranking information? Thanks in advance for the help!

Franklin itself is a wonderful town. All of williamson county has excellent schools and I don't know a part that isn't relatively family friendly. Franklin is a smallish town outside of Nashville with both high and low home prices. I'm sure that you will able to find something nice in your budget, regardless what you are willing to spend. I myself, really like the historic downtown part of Franklin b/c of its walkability, proximity to shops/restaurants and its overall feel.

If your job is near Franklin I would look in Franklin, Brentwood, Nolensville and Spring Hill. All are WCS schools which are considered the best in the state. All of WC is family friendly. The County Rec deptartment has lots of wonderful programs for kids (swimming, tennis, etc) and so do the YMCAs. Also a lot of the new subdivisions have community pools which are great for meeting people and kids to play all summer long.

Although WC has some of the most expensive real estate in the state, there are still plenty of parts that are affordable. It isn't full of $700k mcmansions (although there are a lot of them).

On the hockey thing, there's a rink right in Franklin, at the A-Game Sportsplex in Cool Springs. The other place I know about is Centennial Sportsplex near downtown Nashville -- in addition to all the other skating events there, it's where the Predators practice.
