We recently moved to Gardnerville, NV from San Diego for retirement. Last couple of days we have had a bird perched on the stove pipe on our roof. It sounds just like an owl but definately is not. It is larger than the partridges that frequent our yard, smaller than an owl, about 10 -12 inches tall with a wingspan of 15 inches, light greyish-brown in color with a black ring around the neck.

I'll take a stab. Could it be a common poorwill (http://www.flickr.com/photos/desertvu/132370978/lightbox/ - broken link)?

They're found almost across the entire state.

Just from what you've described, it sounds like it could be a ring-necked dove (especially since you said it sounds like an owl).

(It doesn't have black dots on it's wings, does it? Because then it could be a mourning dove).

We have the ring-necked doves in Pahrump. They look like mourning doves but without the black dots on their wings.

Yes,the doves certainly do make owl-like sounds but their appearance really doesn't resemble an owl to me. And a Chukar Partridge does look like an owl but I'm not sure it makes sounds like an owl.

Well, it will be interesting what the OP thinks best describes what he/she is seeing.

Scirocco 22 you are correct--chukars don't sound anything like owls!
