i've been traveling a bit lately, so let's get caught up....

we've got new construction!!! this one is L O N G overdue. waaaay back in 1999, our va clinic was seeing ~650 patients. in 2001 they moved into the existing clinic on calvada ave. the building is 4800 sq ft & the population had begun to grow, so they were seeing ~1500 vets by that point. nowadays they see more than 2400 vets in the exact same building. they have been busting at the seams for a while now & the government keeps promising to build us a bigger building. in fact, at one point we had been promised that a new larger facility would be open by the end of sept 2012. well....that day came & went without a groundbreaking ceremony. heck, i don't they they even had a location picked out.

what was the holdup? washington dc. basically too many hands in the cookie jar & lots of red tape, for no real reason. at one point we were told everything was ready, all we needed was a signature. with all of the government shut downs & the stalemates that have been happening, our veterans had been given the short end of the stick.

but that all changed on january 29 2016! we FINALLY had a groundbreaking ceremony. whoop whoop! the new $12 million, 10,000 sq ft facility is located directly next to the hospital. the new facility is outpatient only - all emergencies can be handled at the hosptial.

i have to say i am impressed. too many times we have groundbreaking ceremonies for new projects coming to town & that's it. the new "coming soon!" sign sits out for all to see & absolutely nothing further is done with the site. i've driven by the site for the new va clinic a few times & things are actually happening. construction equipment is out playing in the dirt daily. i'll try to get progress pictures as the project moves along

i stumbled upon a groundbreaking this morning. i couldn't stay for the actual ceremony as i had to get to work, but i did stop in for a few pics & grabbed some literature

coming soon! (or so they say) a NEW healthcare partners facility is being built the corner of hwy 160 & loop rd. where's loop rd you ask? if you know where sunflower fashions used to be, it's right there. if you know where hollis harris realty is, it's right across the street. if you remember the big ol' jolly green giant that used to stand watch over hwy 160, it's kitty corner across the street from that. the lot they plan to build this thing on is empty & there's no good/distinct landmark that stands out.

so it's going to be a 58,000 sq ft medical facility, with 1000 sq ft for the pharmacy, a coffee shop & from the looks of it, a billion parking spaces. hot diggity - the jobs it'll bring! it'll also include an urgent care dept that will be open 16 hours a day, 365 days per year. which makes me question....what'll happen to our existing urgent care facility? which just happens to be owned by healthcare partners as well. i'm not sure if they plan to have 2 urgent care centers? or just the new one? the existing urgent care center closes at 11pm (last i remember) & has a helipad basically in their parking lot. i don't see a helipad on the plans for the new place.

when does the new place open? i was told they are anticipating a spring 2017 opening date. i certainly hope they actually go thru with it & that this isn't just another fancy dancy groundbreaking ceremony that leads to nothing.

i toodled into vegas the other day & took the long way home - up hwy 95 thru indian springs & down hwy 160 into pahrump. i am 10 minutes outside of town, on the johnnie curve, when i spotted these:

didya spot the 2 babies??? the blonde on the right hand side doesn't look to be more than a month old. then to the right of the fence post is a white & black butt, that one is under a year old. the black & white one on the left was lookout for the group. everytime i got too close, s/he told the rest of the group to move further away from me.

this group was on another hill, but headed for the big group. the shiny dark brown one is prego!

good looking group. everyone looks healthy, no ribs showing.

for those of you not familiar with the area, johnnie is a "town" just north of pahrump. i say "town" but it's really just a wide spot in the road with a handful of homes. just barely past the homes is a curve, if you're not paying attention you could easily run off the road. it is a popular area for wildlife spotting so be careful!

well now....this is interesting. in today's paper there is an article about valley electric's upcoming fiber optic roll out. they are holding 2 workshops next week, where they will educate the public about the new service.

tuesday & thursday, starting at 9am (all day workshops). at the treasure's rv resort (hwy 160 & leslie). i'd love to attend but i gotta work, maybe i'll pop in on my lunch break. i'm not sure why they didn't do one during the day & one after hours.
