to the right was a small 2 drawer dresser, a tv hanging on the wall & a closet which was good sized, but smaller than the bathroom. the view from my windows:

yep, that's main street below the balcony. the building across the street has been many things in it's lifetime - soda fountain shop; dr office; sandwich shop; turquoise jewelry shop & currently a quilt/craft store.

just outside my door were some historical markers i guess you could call them. the lightening thru out the hotel is authentic, which translates to.....there ain't much there, so trying to get a good picture of these things without a glare from the flash or outside winow lighting was a challenge

the elevator in the hotel still works. it's not fast, but it still does it's duty. i don't think i noticed this "certificate" the last time i was here, obviously it doesn't go with the hotel but still an interesting artifact

the mizpah is owned by fred & nancy cline, who are vintners from northern california (Home | Cline Cellars in Sonoma, Ca.). nancy's family used to live in tonopah so it only made sense for her to purchase it. they have brought many jobs to town & they are always thinking of new ways to help promote more jobs. so far they have the hotel, the restaurant inside the hotel, the casino next door to the hotel, the brewery/eatery across the street from the hotel & their latest development is behind the hotel

the stone building was the 1st ever built in tonpah (1902) & in it's previous life was a brewery & then an alcohol storage facility. the cline family has built on the tan addition to the left of it. when i spoke to the construction guy on site, he is guesstimating it will be done june/july area. what is it? it will be a hostel, with ~10 beds

Love that room! I've never been in Tonopah!!

370z - i don't mind visiting tonopah, but i could never live there, it's just too small/remote for me.

lvmensch - i have checked around & here's what i discovered. yes, those rules/ordinances were voted in. however, they have been overturned or deferred i guess you could say. to the state water district. i couldn't get an answer as to when this change happened, but that 100 foot thing is no longer valid

Not surprised. I found the action but it did not appear to be in the Statutes.

However I did come across the encyclopedia of Pahrump water.

https://www.leg.state.nv.us/App/Inte.../Document/5677

This is a state document dealing with the fact situations in Pahrump. Note by the way that the number to question is always the projected annual yield of the aquifer. That is 20,000 AF in Pahrump. The State Engineer has been known to get these wrong. The only real way to tell is control the withdrawals for a few years and see what happens. Bdut that is close to impossible to do.

o yeah, i remember seeing that document. it was the beginning of the water board - which has recently disbanded (i believe) & the commissioners are handling it all.

jason king (state water board) is a well known name out here. he's just doing his job, but he certainly didn't make any friends in the community either. his position is that we have oversold our water rights & if everyone came forward TODAY to use their rights, there wouldn't be enough water to go around. with the water schemes that happened in the past (the one where the same water rights were sold a billion times over), i totally understand how that could've happened.

there is a group of people here, that tend to believe the rumor mill & don't always do their homework before telling all of their friends. when jason king first came out here & made his announcement that we have oversold our rights, there was wide spread panic about "they're coming to meter our wells" or "they're going to force us to utilities inc" o please. jason had asked for volunteers - homeowners that were willing to put a meter on their well so the state could get a better idea of how much the average homeowner was using. did i volunteer? i'm not opposed to the idea, just for my own curiousity, but no i didn't volunteer. i moved here for less rules. do i think they could forceably come thru & make us meter our wells? it would be a long hard fight. majority of us are gun owners. some of us have our wells behind locked fences/doors. a lot of us have dogs that don't like strangers in the back yard. i guess where there is a will, there is a way, but it certainly wouldn't be an easy task for anyone to accomplish.

no one has come up with a solution to appease everyone & i will admit, i haven't read every single word that was published about this topic. i try, but i just don't have enough time in my day to scour thru it all & still earn a paycheck. i do read the newspapers & i try my best to tune in when the commissioners meetings are happening.

the best place to get your current water district information at is:

Jason King is a well known @#@$%%^%#$$. He has no redeeming features. He has been after the domestic well owner for some years and has partially succeeded but appears to be about to take a lose in the existing legislative session.

The rub is and remains that Nevada gave away a lot more water than there was and did it in a way that gives the owner a property right. There were limits to the right but the courts mostly threw them out in a battle between the State Engineer and UP railroad some years ago. Basically the State claimed it could take back any rights not used in five years. The courts said only if the owner used no rights.

So ole Jason continues to chase the domestic well. Basically trying to give them a priority date which will mostly be after the big users of water rights. The result would be he could close domestic wells of the later date in favor of the older water rights. Present legislation would prevent that for interikor home use and watering pets and animals.

A couple of basic facts: Pahrump is located in Nye County. We have our own electric company, our own water companies & a completely different way of life. We are not Vegas & we don't want to be Vegas. Life out is here is much slower than Vegas. It's not uncommon to find ex-Vegas people living here & loving it....YES LOVING IT!

Nye County covers 18,000+ square miles. We are the 3rd largest county in the United States. Pahrump is at the bottom part of the county, Tonopah (3 hrs north) is in the middle of the county & right now I'm not sure what town is the the furthest north of me

Now let's see if I can figure out how to get some pictures posted out here.....
I just found this post in Google while doing some research on Pahrump.

My Wife and I moved to Las Vegas about a year ago from a small mountain town in Southern California. After living in Vegas for over a year, we absolutely can't stand it here! We have 2 young kids and a newborn and the thought of raising young children in Vegas is terrifying to say the least.

I just started looking for other other areas, Summerlin and Henderson are nicer areas of Vegas, but they're still too close to the hustle and bustle in my opinion and way too expensive for us. I've heard of Pahrump before thanks to listening to Art Bell in years past. But I didn't realize that there was so much there in regards to shopping, etc. I always use to think it was nothing more than a hole in ground out in the middle of nowhere.

From what I've seen so far, it looks relatively inexpensive to live out there in regards to housing, one thing I've noticed is that there seems to be ALOT of mobile home/manufactured houses out there. The population size and general feel of the city is very similar to the last city we use to live in.

The only thing that concerns me and keeps coming up in my mind is the distance from my job. I work at Nellis AFB, and I calculated the drive from Pahrump. It's a good 71 miles, or 1 hour and 19 minutes.

I'm just not so sure if I'm willing to do that drive everyday, 5 days a week. The wear and tear on a vehicle plus the money I'd be spending on gas alone has me concerned.

Right now, I'm 10 minutes away from the base, but we also don't live in the best area of Vegas either. And at this point, the drive might just be worth it to get away from all the craziness and madness that is Vegas.

Nick2788, that's a commute all right. When I moved to a Maryland suburb 18 miles from my office in '72 the ride was 35 minutes. 20 years later it was a good hour and a half. But worth it! No drug problems etc. with the three daughters and today each of them could take care of us. I'd say an hour drive on the highway is easier on your car than 15 minutes of stop and go.

As for Pahrump, we're considering moving there after 17 years living in the Rockies 25 miles from a cell phone signal. We've spent several months here in South Riverside County California since leaving Colorado, and while it's a great place, there isn't enough room between neighbors to suit me, at least not where I can afford to buy. And off roading in the Pahrump area is attractive to us.

Maybe we'll see you there some day.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. A 10 mile trip in Vegas can take 30 minutes or longer depending on where in the city your going. The traffic and the people are ridiculous. The one thing that's really getting to me is the beggars and pan handlers hanging out everywhere always asking for a dime.

The commute might just be worth it, I was thinking of buying a hybrid if we move out there to help offset the money in gas.

Do most people that live in Pahrump commute to Vegas for work?

nick - that commute might be a little long, however the good news is if you take the north route (hwy 160 to hwy 95) it is less populated so you won't have the accidents or snow that the mtn pass gets. for me commuting from here to nellis every day would get old quickly. maybe there are other people here in town that commute to nellis that you can carpool with? i know some of my neighbors commute to creech (or whatever it's called these days).

as for the mobile homes, it depends on what area of town you are looking in. at one point in time, that was all that was available out here. it is not that way anymore.

do most people out here commute to vegas? not necessarily. yes there is a large population that does, but it's not as many as it once was. the crash of 2008 wiped out most of the ones that did. there are jobs here. the good paying ones are hard to find & rarely open up. the rest tend to be minimum wage.

Yeah, the commute is my biggest issue right now. I've thought about carpooling, but I don't know anyone out there in Pahrump, and everyone I work with lives in Vegas. I heard CCA has a jail in Pahrump. My Dad use to work at one of their prisons as a correctional officer before they converted it to a state prison. I believve he was making somewhere between $25 to $27/hr. Unfortunately, the only openings they have at the jail in Pahrump are low entry/low paying.
