Very odd down here also, started about three weeks ago. Birds just up and disappeared. Titmouses, sparrows, red and yellow finches, chickadees, nuthatchers, blue jays, cardinals, doves- we had dozens of each all summer. Were filling the feeders twice a day. Then- gone.

For about three weeks, none. Now a few blue jays, cardinals and doves are back. The downy woodpeckers didn't change throughout this period of time. The hummers left early.

We have not had much if any rain in past month, but we put water out for them. It seems like it had something to do with the hurricane activity, but that's just my feeling. Has never happened like this before in prior seasons, so lots of natural food sources doesn't quite ring true.

It's a mystery.
An explanation was given in post #23

Yes, I read that explanation, but as I wrote, it's never happened in prior years, even though there is usually an abundance of natural food sources during these months. That's why I thought it didn't seem quite sufficient as an explanation.

Maybe there are just way more natural sources this year. Anyway, hope they come back, we miss them.

Cheers.

We still get regular visits from Blue Jays. It seems no matter how much natural food is available, they still can't resist shelled peanuts

Interesting. We have a feeder full of shelled peanuts, but only get a random woodpecker or so. No jays since July!

Hmmmm, there's also bark butter bits in the tray feeder, but I always see them going after the nuts.
