I am a Realtor, and have lived in NH for over 25 years. Merrimack is centrally located, but to get affordable prices, and more of a New England feel you'd be wise to look to the north or west of Manchester/Concord. Prices tend to be higher to the east, in the "golden triangle" (between Nashua, Concord, and Portsmouth/Salem). Within a 30-40 minute commute you can find some nice towns like Goffstown, Dunbarton and Henniker to the west, or Penacook and Boscawen to the north.

If you're willing to go a little further afield, you'll get even more for your money. New Boston is another very nice town, as is Mont Vernon and Milford.

My husband will be a store manager and will be working hours and need to be closer to his work. Are those the only choices to go so far away???

Default Manchester is a great place to live.....

My husband and I have lived in Manchester for a long time. We love it. Yes, like any city, there are some areas that are less than desireable - however, it's a great city with good restaurants, a minor league baseball and hockey team, lots to do and it's close to the mountains, the coast and Boston.

Merrimack is about 15 minutes from both Manchester and Nashua. You can look in the following towns for rentals as well as purchases - and the commute would be about 15-30 minutes to Merrimack:

Manchester (15)
Nashua (15)
Hudson (20)
Hollis (20)
Amherst (15)

All of those are nice cities and towns. There is much more to do in Manchester than Nashua for entertainment and I believe the job market (and pay scale) is better than Nashua.

You may want to check out (broken link) and check out apartment complexes in those towns.

The real estate market is still very high here. I would recommend renting in a town prior to buying to ensure that is the area that you are comfortable and enjoy the surroundings.

Good luck !

Earthangel, what do you know about Washington and out that way?

Default We live in Merrimack - and love it!

Why not consider living in Merrimack? Housing costs are pretty high all over NH, but depending on your needs you may be able to find a nice home. All of Merrimack is nice. We've been there 20+ years, and loved it (retiring and downsizing in January, moving south -- winters are too much for me!). If I had to do it over again, I'd still pick Merrimack. It's a nice "small town feel" with big town conveniences. Shopping is close no matter which direction you go. Renting for a while may be a good idea if you're not sure. But, it's a buyers' market, so you might want to take advantage of that.
