Both are beautiful states, but if you live in NH and work in ME, you'll pay ME income tax on it.

Here's a thread I started on this very subject that might interest you. I looked at the tax implications of living in ME and working in ME vs. living and working in NH. Living in NH (generally higher property taxes) and working in ME (you'll pay income tax on that money you make in ME) is the worst combination you can have, in my situation. Your mileage may vary. The money you save on property taxes in ME does not come close to offsetting the income tax you'll have to pay because you live in ME.

The decision was a no-brainer for me, given my projected financial situation. I am now only looking for land in NH. I would only consider working in ME if the job payed significantly more that a comparable job in NH to make up for the thousands in income tax I'd have to pay, even if I lived in NH. Good luck - both areas can be great places to live, depending on what you want....

Default Maine is downright obnoxious about collecting taxes

Maine is unbeliveably unfreindly about taxation, regardless of the location of your source of income. If income appears on your federal income tax form Maine wants a "piece of it" even if was derrived outside Maine. If it's your income, and you work in Maine, you will owe it regardless.

Maine is now charging private pilots excise tax whom land in Maine more than 3 times in the year, based on tower records! [again, regardless of State of registry, residency or employment]:hand:
