The cemetery next to the fire dept. has the remains of Elizabeth Haddon Estes, the founder of the town.

Nice pictures Nex. Just to add to the history lesson, the road you were on, Kings Highway, is in pretty much the same exact location it was during the colonial era and the road, at least heading south into Gloucester and Salem County still pretty much follows the same path it did in the colonial era.

If you read about the battle of Red Bank during the Philadelphia Campaign of the Revolutionary War, you will read that the British crossed from Philadelphia to Cooper's Landing, which is now Camden and the namesake of Cooper River. They then marched (down what is now Haddon Ave.) to the Village of Haddon (now known as Haddonfield) where they turned onto The King's Highway which they followed south to what is now National Park where the battle occurred.

Following the British defeat at the battle, they retreated back to Haddonfield and billeted their troops there. Their wounded were cared for at the Indian King Tavern which still stands along Kings Highway between Haddon and Potter Street. The Indian King is also famous as being the seat of the NJ Assembly during 1777. When the British moved to occupy Trenton, the Assembly fled south to Haddonfield and conducted their business from the tavern. It is this tavern where NJ officially declared itself the State of New Jersey, not the Colony of New Jersey and adopted the Great Seal that is still used today with only minor changes.

The Hessians were sent to capture Fort Mercer & got to Haddonfield the night before the battle. They removed people from their houses & forced them to spend the night around a bonfire in the street (Kings Highway) There was a farm located where the high school now stands & Jonas Cattell was apprenticed as a blacksmith there.

The John Gill house stood on the site of Greenfield Hall. John Gill had married the widow Hillman, whose son, Samuel, was a friend of Jonas & he was apprenticed to George Hannold, the wheelmaker, who was across the road ( the house still stands at Kings Highway & Potter Street but has been greatly modified.).

In the morning, after the Hessians left, Jonas ran on back roads & warned the troops at Fort Mercer

My bad - Elizabeth Haddon's husband was John Estaugh, not Estes.

Haddonfield also played into a search for beef cattle when Washington was holed up at Valley Forge. It was memorialized as the great cow chase. TEHS - Quarterly Archives

I figured Kings Highway had some history behind it.
