it's easy from the persepective of you, the reader, to give the advice, I understand that . I'd say the same thing if I were you responding to this. But if it were actually you who had to watch someone skate by financially for life by some subverting tax responsibilities and all the while spend the better part of two decades reminding you how much money they have - it would wear on you, too, after a while.
No you don't let it wear on you. You said he IS your friend but you pick your friends. You can choose to listen to it another 15 years.. that's your choice but if that is the only thing eating at you.. well you are a lucky person.

If his lifestyle bothers you so much, and you feel so much contempt for him, don't be friends with him. It's actually very simple.
If he's got his money in an interest-bearing account, the bank would send a report of interest paid to the IRS. If he had it in a non-interest-bearing account, like a plain old checking account, the bank would not have to report anything to the IRS.
He sounds like the kind of person that you are better off just avoiding. He's not going to change, and he'll continue to get under your skin. Is it worth it to you?
