I grew up in Clifton, NJ and live in TN now. I always thought Asbury Park would be such a great place to live, given the history of it and the overall vibe, if it wasn't as dangerous as people said it was. What is it like now? I haven't even visited since 1994. Thanks!

It's dangerous, rundown, and in dire need of rehabilitation.
I always liked it for what it was, but I wouldn't bother with it today. It's slowly getting better, but its location isn't so hot because there's no real job market nearby.

It has a beautiful housing stock for the most part, but the crime within it all is depressing.

Actually in the last few years it has been sometimes slowly and sometimes quickly going up, getting better. There are sidewalk cafes, restaurants, crowds during the summer.
If you go outside the beach and downtown areas some of the residential areas might be "iffy", but overall if you haven't been there a while you'd be surprised. Lots of restaurants, etc now and it even gets crowded (again) during the summer.
Definitely different then the "ghost town" it was between the 80's and a few years ago.

From all accounts I've heard it's as bad as ever. Think of Atlantic City with no casinos and a rockier, colder beach.

They've cleaned up a few blocks and dressed them up with some cool bars and restaurants, but the crime rate has not changed overall. In fact, gun crime and murders have been way up during the past couple years.

It's a good place to visit for the night, but I wouldn't want to live there. Also, I wouldn't blame the job market. Asbury Park is surrounded by plenty of pretty wealthy towns where people seem to get along just fine.

There's Asbury Lanes which is a neat little place. And of course the Stone Pony. Other than those I feared for my life in that city. When I worked for Manalapan Twp some people there used to go and hang out there all the time when I used to say I always hung out in New Brunswick. And I'm like call me after the place has turned around. I've yet to see that happen. Drive-by shootings scare me more than anything.

But drive-bys are a matter of convenience, you know, you don't have to park, get out of the car,,,

If you were in Asbury Park in 1994, then it's probably slightly nicer, as they've made a few valiant attempts to fix it.

The boardwalk and the neighborhoods within 3-4 blocks or so are not bad nowadays.
