To me, it seems you've still missed my point... It's not about payment, it's about gratitude. If you're not gratuitous, then don't bother tipping. No problem. (As seen in the poll results, most people don't.)
Have you ever gotten a tip from a a gratuitous customer? Ever gotten a bonus from the boss? They're all about gratitude.
Gratuity for what? Pumping my gas? That's what they are paid to do.
Yes I get bonuses, but only when my company does well and I get a good evaluation. If the above doesnt' happen, then no bonus for me.
I tipped ONCE, the first time I got gas in NJ; coming from NY where there is self serve gas, full service is just that an added SERVICE so I felt obliged to tip. The guy looked at me like "What is this? You neeed change or something?" and my husband was like what the heck did you do that for? Haven't tipped since and I don't feel bad about it either, they don't get paid at lower than minimum wage to account for tipping. Plus in NJ it's not a "service" it's a mandatory legality.
When you don't tip at a restaurant you know the waiter is all "can you believe that DB didn't tip me?!?!" when you don't tip at the gas station the guy doesn't even flinch he's already standing by the next car not caring.
I didn't answer the poll, because tipping when they do extra service wasn't there - but I tip if they do something extra like wash my windows (Sunoco at 34th street does this). I have also brought a bucket of Johnson's popcorn to a station where I was a regular and had the same 1-2 attendants throughout the year.
I don't tip as it's not standard, but more importantly (and this has nothing to do with the individuals working there), I despise the full-service system which stands in contrast to the common sense of 48 states and I refuse to do anything to encourage its existence.

Does this mean you drive to NY or PA to fill up your car?
I never before met anyone who chose to live in a state they so despised solely for the purpose of bashing it at every opportunity.
It's amusing that someone would waste the hours of their life to strive to offend other people.
i've never seen a gas attendant do something worthy of getting a tip. sounds harsh, i know, but usually, they bang my car with the nozzle, they take a while to get to the cars to start. they never stay at a car to hold the pump so it goes quicker (like, when there's no one else there), and they never check your oil, tire pressure, or wash your window any more. i'd hardly call it "full service" and would love to see this law changed. it causes huge backups at the gas stations on the turnpike and parkway. i don't see the benefit to it at all.
that said - if i had an experience like njkate described...i'd be happy to toss the kid a $20 for christmas.
Honestly, most gas station NJ attendants are weirded out when you tip them (I know this from several friends who work at Wawa, all of whom found it weird and have only been tipped by out of staters so far), and the Wawa ones technically aren't allowed to accept tips.
i was tipped once when i worked at a sporting goods store. a woman in her 50s was trying on sneakers, and I got down, laced them, and helped tie them properly for ankle support. she gave me $5 when she bought them. these days, I'd do the same for someplace that gave me that kind of service, since now all they do is hand you the box of sneakers and move on to the next customer. lol.

I don't really think the gas law is "offensive" one way or the other, but it is wrong, and if protesting that upsets a few, so be it.
I prefer self service. It's vastly superior, hence existing in 48 states. I'm entitled to my opinion and you to yours.
