Does anybody around here commute into NYC from Monmouth County? I used to live in Monmouth County so I'm familiar with the area, however, I never commuted into Manhatten. I've been thinking about moving back and I wanted to see how viable a job search in NYC would be given commute times/experience from Monmouth County to NYC. Any commute experiences that folks could share would be helpful.

Thanks!
Yes, I do.
I take the train from Little Silver to Hoboken, then PATH to 14th Street. It takes me two hours door to door. Moving a little up the line would cut the commute a bit, and if you are working downtown, that would cut some time, as well. I moved here last year from Bergen County because Monmouth is so much cheaper, but even from up there it took me an hour and 20 minutes. I've gotten used to the commute. I read on the train. Sometime I nap.
The only problem with the more northern Monmouth train stations is that there are long waiting lists for parking. Little Silver had non-resident parking available. Long Branch has a daily lot than anyone can use. The NJ Coast Line is pretty good with a lot of trains.
A couple of my coworkers take Academy Bus from Howell. They say that works out well, but they come in and leave on an early schedule so they don't get caught in traffic. Other people do the park-and-ride thing from Cheesequake rest stop.
Since I moved here I've run into a lot of people who work for the same employer as I do who commute from down here. Some even commute from Ocean County.
Regardless of which method you use, you will pay. None of it is cheap.
And not to be the spelling police, but if you're going to work there, you'd better learn to spell Manhattan. Hehehe.
Thanks for the response, that's the kind of data I'm looking for. 2 hours....ouch.
Thanks for the spelling correction, bad typo (multiple times) and very lazy on my part for not running spell check.
The acadamy bus is way faster than the train frequent service at rush hour along rte 36 or even lincroft and 139 has express buses 132,130 and 136 that are super express from freehold or coverd bridge at rte 9 check that NJT schedule for details. Plus there is 133 and 135 from abberdeen or rte 79 which also go to NYC they are way faster than the train. However A monthly Rail pass will work on ANY NJT BUS INCLUDING 139,133,136 any Bus run by New jersey transit!!!! including light rail. By the way the buses are FASTER than 2 hours to NYC!!!!!! New jersey is the only place I know where buses are faster than trains!!!!!!!
My mom takes the ferry from Atlantic Highlands to Pier 11, usually under and hour. She vastly prefers it to driving.
My husband used to take the ferry from Belford to Pier 11. It cut his commute time in half. Of course it cost more than twice as much as the train. He quit taking the ferry when the cost went up to (around) $700/month. Then thankfully, he found a job with a 10 minute drive.
I was taking Academy bus from Hazlet to lower Manhattan and my husband still commutes from here to Port Authority. He then takes the train to the Union Square Area. For me it was definitely 2 hours each way. For him it's 1.5 - 2hrs.
If you work 9-5 I would not commute downtown by bus. The Holland Tunnel is a mess and gets worse by the day. When I moved here 2 1/2 years ago it took a maximum of 1.5 hours to get to Wall Street. When I stopped this summer it was at least 2 hours each way door to door.
The ferry is fantastic from Belford and it costs a small fortune.
If you work in downtown area or midtown east IMO nothing beats the Seastreak ferry from highlands/atlantic highlands. Ferry ride itself is 45 minutes to downtown (1 hr to midtown).
It is definitely costly though. It helps if you can get the TransitChek voucher to the max ($230) to keep some of the monthly fare tax-free. Also, you probably can get more in terms of housing in Monmouth compared to the counties closer to the city.
$645.00 a month for The Seastreak. Insane, but beats all alternatives if you live in Monmouth County and work downtown. Beers 6.00 too!!!
