My wife and I are starting a family and I am starting a new job in NYC. Will be starting at 250k/yr and can put 400K down. We are looking for a home in a good school district, low crime, and within 50 minutes or less to NYC by train. Any recommendations for towns in Bergen, Essex, Union counties (I grew up in South NJ so don't know north very well)?
East Brunswick is probably your best bet. Central NJ with GREAT schools and under 50 minutes to NYC without traffic. What price range were you looking in?
If you go to the realtor site for listings there are some gorgeous homes in Denville, NJ. By bus it is less then one hour to the city.( 45 min. in no traffic)......also they have a train station. I just looked at what they had to offer, and there are just fantastic homes. All brick, or contemporary........quite a good list of homes, of many types.
Its a cute town, and is the "hub" of Morris County. Many of its areas include lakes. Best of luck to you....
I think the commute from East Brunswick would get old pretty fast. Westfield and Denville are both good choices though.
Livingston and Millburn are both closer ( about 30 min ). Millburn has a direct train, but 1 mil. only buys an average house...at least on the Short Hills side. Livingston has express busses and your money goes a little bit further.
You might also want to check out Summit, Chatham and Madison.
East Brunswick, Denville and Livingston are probably not good options if a reasonable commute is what you're looking for. From East Brunswick and Livingston, you'd either have to take a long bus ride or drive to a train station. Denville is a loooong train ride.
Can't tell you much about Bergen County, but Westfield is probably a good option for you in on the Raritan Line in Union.
Millburn, Short Hills, Summit (and maybe Chatham or Madison if you don't mind a bit longer on the train) are also good options on the Morris/Essex Line.

On the Livingston express bus, you are in the city in about 30-40 minutes depending on traffic. This bus makes no stops, and uses the designated bus lane at the tunnel. It leaves 3 times in the morning and three times in the evening.
This is not a dis to Westfield as it is a wonderful town and should definitely be checked out. I just think the poster should have ALL the facts.
