Hi Everyone. I was born in NY because my mother happened to be there when she went into labor.
All my family was from Jersey City, Hoboken, Newark, Essex or Hudson Cty's in General and upstate NY.
My mother died 6 years ago and at that time, all her belongings like pictures were put in my sisters basement. It flooded and no one knew till after the funeral. Yes I know, STUPID!
When my mom died, we realized we had lost touch of all our relatives except 3 cousins from my maternal grandmothers side and had no pictures or anything. I joined several DNA sites and started a tree on ancestry. I am hoping to find pictures of Jersey City, Hoboken Ward 2 and 3, Newark, Elizabethtown, Essex farm land and anywhere else in that general area from the 1800's forward. I went to the library and most are not available. I did get a picture of my Grandfather who was a coach at Dickenson HS. My great Uncle was a detective at Hudson PD and his son became a policeman too and even they will not help. Not sure why, most were buried at HolyCross in N Arlington . That is it. Anyone that has anything, we would be so grateful. I know sounds strange, but like they say, you don't know what you have till it is gone. We were not picture kind of people. We sure are now. Thanks.
No it doesn't sound strange at all. I myself have longed for looking of old pictures JC from times people seem to forgotten about, when JC was actually a cit people looked up to not down. I uploaded some pics i have found of JC on the internet, i don;t remember where but there they are. i've had them for some time so i couldn't even bother looking. The 1st pic is of JC in the early 1900s, i remember that much. I think that the setting is in downtown, around St. Peter's Prep. The 2nd & 3rd are from around the same time period but they aren't exactly photos more like drawings. The 4th is the medical center before they have been revitalized. The last one im not sure when they took place, but it still look old before the gentrification.
I appreciate this topic because i have always had pride being born & raised in this city, and never experienced what it meant to have pride being from JC. So when i see these pictures it definitely raises the level of pride i do have and makes me want to help being the city back to the level it once had, and hopefully even further. I know sounds corny but if no one start to gain that mind frame to help the city, who will?
Sidenote: i never even knew that Elizabeth was called elizabethtown at one point. or that essex county even had farmlands, unless it was early in american history.
and damn these late night posting grammars, can i blame it on the alcohol this time?
