I'm Italian, live in Elmont in a nice Italian neighborhood. Currently renting but costs for housing in LI have gotten out of hand. I'm looking to move to Jersey but I'm not too familiar with the neighborhoods/towns. I'm 26, married to my beautiful wife, and have 3 month old son. I've heard good things about Hazlet but would like more info on other towns as well.

Looking for:
1. Town no further south than Hazlet, NJ
2. House price range up to $600k
3. Italian neighborhood preferably
4. Good schools
5. Nice shopping areas, community events, family oriented, etc
6. Overall a good place to live

I'm self-employed so commuting is not a priority, only to and from shopping areas and schools.

Fairfield (Essex County). High percentage of Italians, easy access to 80, 46, 23. A few miles from the Parkway. One of the lowest taxes in the county, and good schools too. Just ask the realtor for a house in a no-flood zone.

East Hanover in Morris County also has a high percentage of Italians, and a good school system as well.

Move to Hazlet. It's nice here. Good schools. A three month old? You'd probably want to get them in preschool (Hazlet has a preschool in-district now, it's supposed to be rather good). The HS is middle of the road, I believe it is like exactly middle of the road (151/350 ranking according to some magazine ranking public HSes in NJ)

There are a lot of italians here in Hazlet.

Hazlet is good as long as you aren't in West Keansburg

I second Nutley! It's the Italian American capital of NJ and they have good schools. $600K will get you something liveable

In my opinion and based in my experience (I lived in both LI and NJ for at least 4+ years in each). LI and NJ is pretty much same in terms of housing costs. I don't think you should expect too much of difference between NJ and LI. Property tax and all that stuff is pretty much on-par if you are at nice suburb areas for both.

Aside from that, check out Wayne, NJ.

NJ is almost always 99.999% better than living on a water surrounded overcrowded sand pit, and NJ is part of America proper. A much better way to live. And you can stop talking funny too.

North jersey, perhaps. But central jersey you get a lot more bang for the same buck in NJ than you do on Long Island. I'm coming from the perspective of growing up in NJ, living on Long Island for 13 years, and being back in Jersey for the last 2 1/2 years.
