Hi - DH is job hunting and he may get a position in NYC. We'd consider NJ if we could find a great safe family town with a 30 minute ride. Need excellent school system and a safe walkable town. Want to beable to walk to elementary school, library, soccer, shops and restaurants. Love an artsy feel. He's interviewing all over the country and we live in CT. The train ride now is just too long for him to get to the city. The budget would be +-$1M.

Any suggestions would be great.

There are some great towns I could suggest in NJ - the only problem is 30 min on the train. Most towns that meet your requirements are at least 40-45 min train ride.

If you would consider Long Island, our very good friends live in Great Neck and they love it. From what I understand it's an excellent town with top schools. LIRR ride is about 20 min.

Edison and Metuchen are a little bit longer than 30 Minutes but they are nice areas with everything possible in the towns.

Maplewood is about the only thing that fits the 30-minute criteria, but anything west of that on that Morris Line would work, and the schools are far better in Summit. Good think you have the $$$$ If he's working downtown, you may also consider living in Atlantic Highlands and taking the ferry. Uptown? Maybe something close to the GW Bridge. But I'm assuming midtown, and if that's the case then Waggie123 has the best advice.

Default These towns are nice

1. Montville- Suburban town with a near by train station. Its located just 30-40 minutes west of New York City near Wayne, NJ.

2. Wyckoff- Great town if you can afford it, its 20 minutes from the George Washington Bridge.

3. Cedar Grove- Train station a town over, its a great town

4. Oakland- Affordable homes in a wooded area. Just 30 minutes from the bridge with a train station about 10 minutes out of town.

5. Wayne- Convienent location, nice home values, close to NYC and a big town.

Would not recomend Maplewood to anyone. Its a nice town but, it is too close to Newark which means higher crime rates and Ridgewood is a lot nicer.

Millburn is 30 min or less by train and has one of the top school systems in the state.

I've taken the train from Boonton (which is right next to Montville) many times, and it always took over an hour. Often times, closer to 1 1/2 hours.
