Hi - DH is job hunting and he may get a position in NYC. We'd consider NJ if we could find a great safe family town with a 30 minute ride. Need excellent school system and a safe walkable town. Want to beable to walk to elementary school, library, soccer, shops and restaurants. Love an artsy feel. He's interviewing all over the country and we live in CT. The train ride now is just too long for him to get to the city. The budget would be +-$1M.
There are some great towns I could suggest in NJ - the only problem is 30 min on the train. Most towns that meet your requirements are at least 40-45 min train ride.
If you would consider Long Island, our very good friends live in Great Neck and they love it. From what I understand it's an excellent town with top schools. LIRR ride is about 20 min.
Maplewood is about the only thing that fits the 30-minute criteria, but anything west of that on that Morris Line would work, and the schools are far better in Summit. Good think you have the $$$$ If he's working downtown, you may also consider living in Atlantic Highlands and taking the ferry. Uptown? Maybe something close to the GW Bridge. But I'm assuming midtown, and if that's the case then Waggie123 has the best advice.
