Hi all,

I'm new to the site and wanted to get some info about Middlesex. I currently live in Colonia but was given an opportunity by my father in-law to purchase a house he owns right off of route 28 by Grant Ave. We were all set to move until I started checking school reviews and the ranking of the school systems in Middlesex. From what I've seen it's ranked at 183 currently. Side note: my wife and I and both of are families are from Scotch Plains (which is ranks 60 something). The reason I brought that up is because now I'm thinking the move to Middlesex is a bad idea and we should just move back to SP though the house obviously won't compare to the one in Middlesex. I just wanted to get some opinions from people that actually live/lived around the area and possibly have kids currently in one of the schools. We have a 2.5yr old and a 5 month old...I know it's a little early to be worried about schools but it's something that has us both second guessing the move. All replies are appreciated!!

I grew up in the area of Middlesex and I have an opinion of what happened in Middlesex. When Union Carbide, American Cyanamid and all the other industries that employed middle class workers closed down. Many of those workers lived in and around Middlesex and Piscataway. Those who were not retired might have realocated to other areas with better job opportunities. Now you have retired folks living there plus others who are in the lower middle class.
When wealth moves on the quality of education follows.

Scotch Plains on the other hand is home to more upper middle to wealthy and the area is not as dependent on manufacturing jobs like Middlesex is.
That being said a ranking of 183 is not great by NJ standards but is also not a poor rating.
Lots of people in other states would love to have schools equal to Middlesex.

I think I'd rather stay in Colonia then move to Middlesex, or even be in Scotch Plains. I would think that the value of a house in Scotch Plains and Colonia would hold up better, I guess it depends on what town in Middlesex...right?

Good morning, I hope this gets to all of you. We are looking at the colonia and clark area for houses. Do any or all of you still live there? How are the school systems? We are going to be commuters as well and thought metro park would be a good start to look. Any and all information is greatly appreciated.
