I lived in Queens and northern NJ so can answer your question. Below are what I can think of for now...
Queens:
- cheaper commute to city via subway
- more walkable areas
- more diverse
- car may not be needed
- homes closer together
- houses more expensive in general
Northern NJ:
- better public schools
- more expensive commute to city via Path/NJ transit trains and bus
- car is necessary for outings
- more space
- higher property taxes
- cheaper gas
Queens,,, being part of that overcrowded overstuffed place you have to cross rivers to get in or out of,,,
You know Longish Eyeland
I know people in Queens and none of them are stuck there. That’s a strange thing to say. Who cares if you’re surrounded by water? That doesn’t restrict your travel one bit. I mean… there’s 2 airports there.

Much of it has to do with non stop traffic to get back to,,,, THE SOIL,,,
Queens and North Jersey are very similar.. when i say "North Jersey", i mean Hudson County, Newark, and few select Southeast Bergen County towns south of the GW Bridge and east of the turnpike
I hate these generalized opinions based on stereotypes with North NJ..
The part of North jersey from Fort Lee down to Bayonne (basically Hudson County and a couple select towns from SE Bergen County, have a TON in common with Queens.. similar ethnic profiles.. apartment buildings and housing stock are similar.. congestion and density are similar too..
I even have a little corresponding neighborhood map btwn Queens and North Jersey..
Fort Lee, Cliffside Park, and Fairview are like Flushing.. lots of east asians.. but the jersey counter part is little quieter.. though not too much
North Hudson county (North Bergen, West NY, Union City and parts of Weehawken) are similar to Corona, Queens with a little bit of Elmhurst.. lots of Latinos and JFK blvd going thru that part of jersey even looks just like Northern Blvd going thru that part of queens..
Jackson Heights with Journal Square.. the jersey version got more Indians where the Queens version has more Bangladeshis
South Jersey City and South Jamaica are similar.. I'd have to say South Jersey City is a bit more congested than Southeast Jamaica..
Me loves your description. I have been keeping an eye on north Bergen housing stock. We spend a little time on the blvd when visiting the walmart over there.
If I can stay in Queens forever, I will, but I wont be owning a home. At least it's a possibility in North Bergen areas, and 20 minutes to Queens to visit Family.
20 minutes from North Bergen to Queens? Maybe at 3 am catching nothing but green lights
