That's why we need more media outlets. We need our own tv networks, news networks etc. We let ny and Philly dictate how we view ourselves. Even connecticut has its own networks.
Exactly. It is an unfortunate truth that the public view of New Jersey is largely out of our hands. According to people in South Jersey, Philly news is not nearly as biased as New York news but New York loves to talk only about the negatives that come from New Jersey. Then if something positive happens in New Jersey they switch it around so that it is something positive that happened in the "New York metropolitan area." Then as soon as something bad happens, its back to "A person was killed in New Jersey today."
I think that comes back around to the fact that as a generality people don't know a lot about the state that we all live in. If we had our own news networks maybe NJ residents would be more knowledgable about this state as a whole instead of just their region.

unfortunately monty, people like to wallow in their ignorance, it gives them a sense of superiority.
also i'd like to add, this is not unique to NJ, you'll find this attitude by all types referring to all states. we seem more sensitive to slams on NJ because it's our home.
It's just so stupid. I have family in North and Central and South Jersey. People who think their specific region of the state is the only region that offers anything good are ignorant. It is as simple as that.

agreed. this attitude unfortunately is not universal.

That is a good point too. I've been trying to be conscious of that when I see it on this forum.
I travel a little bit for work and i've had several people from waitresses to hotel receptionists say "you dont seem like someone from new jersey". One hotel receptionist when informed that i was from to nj said "you havent lived in nj all your life have you"? I think the rest of the country thinks everyone from nj looks and sounds like a charecter from the sopranos or jersey shore.
TV shows like Jersey Shore, The Real Housewives of NJ and Jerseyliciois have helped fuel the NJ stereotype that everyone in NJ speaks and acts like, like, well, Tony Soprano. Even Governor Christie's famous youtube moments and media blitzes calling people idiots, numbnuts, and general in your face, tough guy(again Tony Sopranoesqe) behavior adds to this stereotype. Lots of people listen to sound bites and read headlines. They do not delve. They do not research. They are ignorant of the fact that we have spectacular mountains, shorelines, and forests. They see what they see and hear what they hear about NJ in snippets.
