So my wife and I currently live in Weehawken. She works in NYU hospital at 30th and 1st ave in manhattan and I used to work in Paramus. We moved to Weehawken to make her commute easy to the city since I drive to work. Well I recently got a new job in New Brunswick and currently commute by taking turnpike south to west 78 and garden state parkway south. this allowed me to avoid the crazy tolls on the turnpike.
We want to move because our apartment is old and want a nicer apartment/townhouse. But at the same time, we want to move closer to Paramus because that's where my parents live and when we have a child, we want to live close enough so that it can be easy to drop the child off at my parents house or for them to drive by our place to look over. At the same time, we are looking for a town that would not overburden our commutes to work since we both usually have to start very early in the morning.
We started looking into Englewood because of its distance from paramus, nice downtown, and seems like that commute wouldn't be bad because I'm still close enough to a major highway (turnpike) and there seems to be an express bus from englewood that has few stops before it gets on the turnpike. also its far away enough from the commuter traffic that is closer to fort lee in case my parents need to drive by to us in the morning.
but what are our other options? What are we missing?
Englewood is kind of close to Paramus but Route 4 really really really stinks during rush hour, especially towards Englewood. I used to live in New Milford and it was close to Paramus but took me so long to get home from Wayne because most of my commute was sitting on Route 4. Also, Englewood has some rough areas...

Your commute could be manageable in many parts of northern NJ, say Westfield or Cranford. The person with the real commuting issues is your wife. Any move outside of Weehawken/Hoboken will add at least 30 minutes if not more to her commute.
New Brunswick is actually an up & coming area and has the train station right there. Highland Park right across the Raritan is a bit more suburban. Lots of great restaurants & bars in downtown N.B. If you add up the potential savings of a rental in N.B. vs. Englewood, it may be doable. You won't be that close to Paramus but it's reachable in an hour.
