Buying a 5000 sq ft home in Wycoff. Lawyer ordered a surveyor who charges $650 and $150/per marker. How do I know if I should go w this Surveyor? First time buying a home here in NJ and not sure what to look for ... also should I pay the money and get the markers? I was told it would probably be up to 6 markers.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

That price seems reasonable(I paid $1000 flat with 4 markers) and pretty nominal considering I know what a 5000 sqft house costs in Wyckoff .Get the markers, they will come in handy if you ever want to do anything that requires a permit(pool, fence, additions, patio, etc) plus it's the only way to get your exact boundaries. Again when you are paying NJ RE prices it's definitely worth it to know exactly where your property lines are. Paul Schilling and Son is a great resource in neighboring Hawthorne if you want a second opinion/price option(he was/is? the Hawthorne town engineer so super reliable/professional). Good luck and welcome to the area.

EDIT: The markers actually may already exist. If the house is relatively new( which given the size I assume it is) the builder would have been required to get the property staked for setback and impervious coverage requirements. In that case it's easy money for the surveyor since the just either use gps or a medal detector to find the exisitng stakes and remark them. This is just FYI since I still think getting the survey with markers is the right way to go, given the comparative peanuts that it costs.

Thank you. I will get the markers b/c we are going to put up a gate, so I want to make sure we don't encroach on our neighbor's property.

Appreciate the advice

Price is fair, markers are optional.
