We want to hit the beach one more time before the summer is over, but we will only be able to do a day trip. Since we'll be traveling with 2 kids (aged 3 and under), we would love to keep our car travel time to a minimum. Thinking about Seven Presidents in Long Branch, but wondering if there are other options, maybe something even closer than Exit 105. Any thoughts?

Sandy Hook is at Exit 117, so that's closer to you than Seven Presidents, unless you are asking also about the bay beaches, like Keansburg. You just have to get there early enough before they close it due to capacity (or go late in the day).

Then, going south from there, you have Sea Bright, Monmouth Beach, and Long Branch, and Seven Presidents is the northernmost of the Long Branch beaches.

Thanks for the suggestions! We ended up at Seven Presidents, which was great--clean, not crowded, and totally family friendly. Took about 1hr 15 minutes from northern Bergen County, so not bad for a Saturday morning in August. On the way home, we stopped at Keansburg Amusement Park, which was OK, not great.

Sounds as if you had a good time. I've gone over to Seven Presidents in the off-season to walk on the beach--you'll still see families with kids flying kites there and whatnot.

Long Branch also had a Jazz and Blues Festival on Saturday from 1 to 9:30 p.m. I went around 5--lots of kids were there. They had food and vendors selling overpriced stuff. There were fireworks at the end, but I didn't stay for them.

Some good music, though. You had to bring your own chairs or blankets and could sit out on the lawn--it was near the Ocean Place resort, north of Pier Village but south of Seven Presidents.

Our family is heading up to Ocean City NJ for the 1st time. First time as a family shore trip. Can't wait!
I wish I knew that I could have taken a train from NYC to the shore as a kid. I used to ride the stupid D train about 1:30 to the last stop in Coney Island for what must have been the worst beach with the worst shore circa 1980s. Gross.

Ocean City is a great place for a family vacation! We've done both OC and LBI since having our son, and really like both. If only they were a little closer to Bergen County!

We saw the signs for the Jazz Festival, but we just missed it. Sounds like it was a good time, though! We hit the beach early, before 9am, so by 12:30 or so the kids were hungry and ready to hit the rides. We could see Ocean Place from the beach! Back in the day (a period of about 2 years when just about everyone my husband and I know got married and we were like professional wedding guests), we went to a bunch of weddings at Ocean Place and McLoone's. LB must be a cool place to live!

I like LB. I lived there once for less than a year when I was searching for a condo. There was nothing in town that fit my requirements and price limit though, so I ended up about six miiles away. It is still my beach town, though!
