Yes but again they pay over 20% of their salaries into them.
What percentage do they pay into Social Security? I think it's 4% for the employee and 6% for the employer for 2011. Do they pay a total of 10%? Or do the school districts pay the 6% (the employer portion)?

How does it add up to 20%?
Teachers pay social security like most employees in this country. Why are you asking?

wow! a whole 20%!!! thats sooooo much! its amazing how people pretend that is a significant number. i pay 100% of my pension. i believe most private sector workers are lucky to get any match, but maybe its a partial match up to 5% or so.
someone in another thread said something like most public employees dont pay into social security.
Police and fire do not pay into social security and we don't have the option. Hence no social security. We pay 8 1/2 into our pension. Myself for close to 35 years. I pay medicare tax as that is required. I pay about 17 percent of my medical. I'm not complaining and I think it's a decent deal. But some people think we pay NOTHING.

Between social security and pension, the teachers in my district are paying 20% of their salaries towards their retirement.
