I'm not certain about mountain lions, but I would expect a decent population in northern NJ (especially Sussex). I went up to the Lakota Wolf Preserve in Columbia a while back, which is in Warren and not too far from PA, and a sizeable wolf and bobcat population was flourishing in containment.
Mountain lions can only kill one of us at a time, the politicians wipe us out wholesale, destroying entire communities with their legislative pen and higher property taxes.
Mountain lions (beige colored), whilst being thought to be almost extinct on the east coast except a few in FL, are at least indigenous to N. America. Black panthers and jaguars could only have been imported here.
And (according to wikipedia), there's never been an authenticated case of a black mountain lion.
I live in Jefferson Twp. and today about 9:15am I was pulling into my driveway when I saw a LARGE black cat going through my woods. I called the Fish and Wildlife Commission of Morris County and no one called back. Are there panthers in NJ?
I had my first big cat sighting this morning. Around 6:15 I saw a mountain lion type cat in a driveway on Jonestown Road in Oxford. It had a long tail, so it was not a bobcat. It was a little larger than my 70 lb. pit bull in stature. The color seemed a little darker than the tawny color of most mountain lions.
There very could be an errant ML running loose in Nj.
It could be wild, not likely but possible.
Given the large population of crazy people, it is conceivable that someone thinks north Jersey is wilderness and a fine place to let their grown up pet loose.
Several large cat rescue groups to prove the extent of the problem of illegal population of exotic animals.
These cats need a large volume of food and you'd think any area where a cat would have many reports of missing pets, people, domestic stock problems.
Bobcats are around but you can go a life time in their home range and never see one.
Consider all the news stories of MLs jumping hikers, killing some, badly ripping others.
Remember many years back a moose came down from NY state to the Deleware water gap property and then walked back from where it came. That is documented. So sure could be a ML running around.
Rest assured the state has nothing to do with 'stocking' them.

I highly doubt it's the only one. Several people I know in Warren County (all reputable) have spoken of big cat sightings over the last few years.
I always believed them. Now I know for sure after seeing it with my own eyes.
I've regularly seen coyote and fox in my area. Also, have seen two bobcats over the last16 years. Plenty of bear as well.
Occasionally cougar/Mt. lion sightings are reported in CT and PA (including large black cats...). Game commissions usually don't pay much attention and say it ain't so.
I have seen bobcats near 'suburban' homes bordering woods in both CT and PA (they are sneaky and you won't see the easily or frequently).
