I recently took a job in Bergen County and will be relocating to NJ from NYC.

Currently my daughter is in a funded private school in thecity that we love but she will be graduating the end of 7th grade next year. This would be an opportune time to move. We are very happy with the servicesthat we have received in NYC so far. We have heard that the special educationsystem for NYC is not as good as areas of NJ for high school.

Has anyone moved a child into NJ with an IEP?

Is there a particular school district that you would recommend?

My daughter is very intelligent but has difficulty in socialsettings and lacks appropriate attention skills (she only pays attention whenshe is extremely interested). Our biggest concern about moving out of NYC is bullying.

Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the insight, sorry I just signed up yesterday. Here are the answers:

Where are you coming from? NYC
Why are you moving? Work and better public school options (especially in special education)
Where will you be working ? If NYC, what part of NYC? - Allendale

Will you buy or rent? I will rent first and eventually buy if I am happy with the area.
What is your budget ? ~$2500/month
What kind of place are you looking for ? 3+ bedroom, apartment or house.

Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you ? 2 cats
Do you need/want good public schools? Yes

Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in
(examples: families with young children, young, mature, artsy, diverse, safe, close-knit, block parties, etc) - Diverse and family oriented (families with young children).

List three things that are important to you in order of importance.(examples: nightlife, outdoor activities, rural/urban, safety, downtown area, charming, new construction, proximity to XYZ, family oriented, easy parking, short commute, etc) - Special education (public), driving proximity to Allendale, diversity.

I can co-sign Montclair. They have dealing with kids with special needs since the 80s. I know a number of special needs adults that had great experiences and are now quite functional as a result. I would also recommend reaching out to the NJCIE with questions as well. They will be a great resource. Good luck!
